In Logan? Lots of coal mining in that area.

Good luck! Try the regional jail and try school bus drivers. If you are coming from Akron you will be in for a shock.

I'm curious- is this area like mountain, mountain, mountain? I mean, is it very little flat land, just high mountains and little hollers? Never been over that way, but I was in the extreme eastern portions of KY over the summer and it was very mountainous. The kind where you get disoriented just standing outside in one spot.

Southern and southwestern WV is very similar to eastern Kentucky, which is no surprise since only a river separates them. The biggest mountains in WV, though, are in the east-central part of the state, from Davis, down thru Elkins, and on to Marlinton and Lewisburg.

my grandparents lived around gilbert Wva, Hampton I believe, my mom and her sisters and brother went to school in Gilbert though. I never see anything about Gilbert posted here. Logan looked like coal country to me. My husband and I were out that way in 2006 and it didn't look like there had been many changes. Lots of curvy roads and just beautiful green mountains.

I'm sure the Logan economy is riding on the coal market...should be a job or two there...machine repair if you are a welder or machinist....Services too.
Locals will give an outsider a break if he is friendly and isn't critical.
Logan is a nice little town...and the country is steep around it...remember, it's a small town...would fit on the little finger of Akron.

Logan's a mountain town, no doubt. One area hillside is filled with houses. Seen from a distance, it reminds me of the hills along the harbor in St. Thomas (without the gorgeous oceanfront, of course).

The area's job situation isn't great. Other than mining and timber-related careers, you're pretty much looking at service-industry jobs. They've worked hard in recent years to grow tourism, with the Hatfield-McCoy ATV trail system, with decent results.

rowlett mom: I'm originally from Gilbert

very cool HRHF, glad to meet someone else who knows gilbert.
I haven't been there in a long time but I am often curious if it has changed any.
