Hillbilly and Rednecks are two distinct groups...like Canadiens and American's...might live on the same turf, but distinctions make them unusual.

Hill billies vs redneks
I was born & raised in a holler in Cabell County WV, somewhat of a flatlander compared to my moutaineer cousins in the eastern part of the state. I've been in the Air Force for several years now and live in Downeast NC. I'm proud to be both a Herd and an "eers fan, and am especially happy when they play and beat the ECU Pirates, who have the worst fans in any division.
To the flatlander tarheels & pirates, I describe the difference in redneks and Hillbilloies in terms of...elevation. See down in NC, there a a ton of rednecks. Real trailer parks. Back home in WV, I've never seen a trailer park (although I lived in two different trailers growin up). Where I'm from they just grade off a flat spot on the side of the hill somewhere and drag in a trailer. If you are lucky, and have enough cinder locks, you can get it level. Anyway that's a different subject. Down in NC, there are alot of rednecks, but you have to go west to find the hillbillies. And of course, you'll even have a few rednecks dispersed within the hillbilly population.
One of my good friends, from Lee County Va, would go to great lengths to tell someone he was a redneck. I used to tell him, if you have to tell someone you are a redneck...then you are.
Me, if someone asks if I'm a redneck, I say NO, I'm a hillbilly, then they ask the difference, and I gladly tell them.
I'm onto somethin new now.
My beautiful wife, a graduate of UNC, brings me along to meet her friends in Raleigh, and Durham. Social gatherings with southern liberals finds me usually stewing and waiting for the party to be over. And since they are all so "Politically Correct". I admit to them that I am an Appalachian American !!!!!

I'm just a Canadian, so what do I know eh? Hillbilly has no negative conotations for me. I drove through rural WV last week and I saw and spoke to many that I would think were "Hillbillies". People that live in the hills that have a simple and a bit old fashioned lifestyle. A lot of times they may not have the greatest education and don't know or care much about the outside world. If their happy with that then all the power to them.
I asked my sister that lives in Toronto. "You know why their are so many hillbillies in the USA?" No she replied". "Well it's very simple," I said. "The country is full of hills.
All I can say is that the state sure seems to be one beautiful place and I'll gladly become an hillbilly to live in a place like that.

I worked many years in Wild and Wonderful and the people are the nicest, give the shirt off their back, help you in any way they can and they don't have much! A redneck is what Billy Ray Cyrus said on the history channel [union coal miners who went to help their brother miners against big coal and wore red handkerchiefs around their necks to distinguish themselves from the coal operators goons] as far as being a Hillbilly i'am that! I remember going to Williamson on what they called a highway, driving 35 with semi's snaking up and over big ole hills, railroad tunnels, towns with crazy names like Crum,Kermit,Naugatuck and it took 4 and a half hours now you can do it in a little over 2 hrs. Would of lived there but couldn't talk the wife in going all she could think of was the movie "Deliverance" lol. All this is just stereo-typing,proud to know some Mountaineers!!

Late addition, I know (but I can't resist reading through these old posts, as you all are hilarious): I was talking to someone the other day who used to work with a bunch of Poles. Some of the Poles REFUSED to speak English, and my friend asked one of the more 'polite' Poles what was up with them, why they were so snobby. The 'polite' Pole explained that the other Poles were from the mountains, and didn't want to give up their old ways of life. All in all, they were... Polish Hillbillies. I don't think I ever laughed so hard.
PS: NCN, catfish don't 'sting'. They do bite though.

I think I get the drift of what you're saying, but damn man- You took her to a holler where incest was actually *gasp* occuring? Did one have a sign saying "I'm his sister" hanging around her neck or something?

Oh come now, don't bad mouth flatlanders. I think you'ns have a lot in common with us in South Dakota, though we're not hillbillies, but we believe in God, Country, hard work, and the American way. But our country is flat.
I passed through W. Va. twice, a comin and a goin when we went to the east coast a few years back. Of the 19 states we went through, the folk of W. Va were the nicest , friendliest folks. Everyone I've ever met from W. Va . has been good folk.
I also see why you all separated yourselves from Va. I was never so glad as when I crossed from Va into W. Va..
And don't fret yourself over those folks who make fun of you hillbillies and we cowboys.
They're the reason this country's goin to hell in a handbasket so's to speak.
The country is full of folks who've been educated beyond their intelligence!
God bless the good folks of W. Va.!!!
