We stayed in a cabin there, Christmas Week of 2007. As MA says, lots of deer, saw some wild turkeys too. The campground is open year 'round; there were a couple of 5th wheelers there when we were.
Unfortunately, the tram isn't open in the winter. One of the lodges is at the far (lower) end of the tram line; that's the only way to get to that lodge.

North Bend is very nice. I live close and we go there often. If you go there, check out the town of Harrisville. They have a great store called Berdines.
I would recomment Tomlison Run State park! We stayed in a Yurt. Reasonably priced, and a lot to do there. The only thing I didn't like was the staff at the camp store. They weren't the best. The pool was closed last year but they hope to have it open this year. It's a nice one! Huge slide!

You might want to check out the Williams and the Cranberry rivers areas. Some fairly remote areas but easy to access. Not uncommon to see a bear or two either!!

Have never been there but recently talked to a woman whose family goes there every year. They love it. I had never even heard of it before.

I remember years ago camping along Seneca Creek in July, and that water was COLD baby!! Can you say shrinkage?
Oh and by the way- I really appreciate all the great suggestions. We're going over them as a family, and it looks like the kids just have to do Blackwater for at least one long weekend trip.. My wife and I are thinking the other spot this year would be the Smokehole area for this year..
We're going to her folks place in Estes Park CO for 10 days during late summer, so we'll have a lot of outdoor activities to look forward to!!

Plum Orchard Lake. Go to the camp ground at the far end of the lake. Primitive camping. There is a dock there to fish. Rent a boat. Shooting range. Hike till you are blue in the face. You can always slip into Beckley to shop or go to a movie.

How rough do you like to tent camp? When hiking through Dolly Sods run into people who are camping in the middle of it (not just in the campground) - now THAT is some rough camping.
