Capitol Music Hall in Wheeling Sold
The historic Capitol Music Hall in downtown Wheeling, home of the WWVA Jamboree for nearly 3/4ths of a century, has been sold to the Wheeling-Ohio County Convention and Visitor's Bureau.

That's nice, but where are they going to get the money to fix it up? The county already commited to the new arts center at Wheeling Park High School. My hunch is that idiot they have for School Superintendent is up in arms about this purchase. He tried to kill the Capitol.

Aren't the Feds going to be sending billions and billions to the states as part of the recovery plan? Use some of that to fix it up.

I was too, it's just too bad county funding won't be available to help with the effort. They've committed that to a project out in the middle of nowhere.

Did not know Live Nation had owned it - have bought tickets from them - they are like Ticketmaster. Isn't the Music Hall the place they used to have big name country singers? Believe this was the place I saw Johnny Cash and June Carter when I was very young. Wonder who owned it back then?

Was it owned by WWVA, or did the radio station just use it for the Jamboree?

The Capital Music Hall was originally the Capital Theater and was privately owned, I believe. WWVA radio was in the Hawley building. The Jamboree began as a country music radio show. When they decided to take it live with an audience, they used a couple different theaters in Wheeling. My mom remembers the move to the Rex Theater and later to a place on the Island.
The Jamboree and WWVA moved to the Capital Music Hall in the late 60s or 70s, I think.

My brother was their head maintenance man for more than 30 years. Both the Music Hall and WWVA, and recently several other radio stations operated out of there have been privately owned. At some point it was sold to Coca Cola, who later sold it to the radio group when they built the Star Lake Ampatheater near Pittsburgh. The radio group is basically a bunch of buttheads.
All the big name country music stars performed there. Johnny Cash more than once. Loretta Lynn and her husband "Moony" took my brother out to dinner one night. The radio station group ruined it.

I hope they fix it up. A lot of the historic buildings in downtown Wheeling need restoration. I wish it could happen. Have you guys seen the Rogers Hotel just sitting there rotting? Sad.
