Just a note, I don't want to be so rural that there are no neighbors. I would like to be situated like we are now, a few miles outside of a town (no, our "city" of 4000 doesn't have a Walmart, but it does have a grocery store, hospital, many pizza places, drugstores, florist, flooring, wallpaper, bakery, and any number of convenience stores) You make do with that, then do the once a week shopping trip to a bigger town or city to get more than the basics. You get used to it. So, 4-5 miles from a similar setting would be fine.

I grew up in Otsego and Delaware County. I found a close paralell in Summers county, WV. Beckley is 20 minutes, Lewisburg is 35. Both have a great deal of shopping and restaurants.

Hear that thousands are without power in the North Central part of the state due to the high winds last evening. The winds also hit the greater Chas area hard. People in towns are without power - bet those in outlaying areas got hit even harder.

That's why you need to have a generator if you live out in the "Sticks"! I have a 10KW generator, runs everything in the house and barn without issue.
What was that Boy Scout saying..."Always be prepared?"

Last ice storm Albany and the surrounding counties (Columbia, Greene, Rennselaer, etc, the bedroom communities for the NYC folks) were without power for close to 2 weeks. Which meant no heat, too, and it was pretty darn cold. So, it can happen anywhere, I guess.
Just a comment, we're not from NYC, in fact we moved from Greene County to Herkimer to get away from the NYC transplants. They bought up the houses because of their "privacy", then cut down all the trees and installed security lights. You could see those suckers across 2 acres of lawn.

I wouldn't say I'm a survivalist, but my family and I will outlast the vast majority of the population when it comes to that.

I agree with you, HB! The attitude is what gets me. Like I said in another post, that's the problem we're having on our creek - people getting stuck up. Thinking they are too good to so much as wave at someone. Those type - I'd rather just stay where they came from.
