I hope Spring has sprung when you come - everything is sooo pretty when it's not the dead of winter. However, some kind of flowers are coming up in my yard - daffodils maybe. They are about 5-6 inches tall.

This might seem like a dumb question but I'm not familiar with the area....was just wondering if you can see the mountains from Hurricane/teays valley as well as from Beckley? I thought I read somewhere on here that you have to go an hour or so away from TV to be able to ski or anything like that but Beckley has a resort right there.

Not sure what all you are imaging, but the mountains of WV aren't like the mountains in Colorado - not as big and it's not like you are going to look out your window and see a towering mountain range. Well, not unless you are on top of one of those mountains. WV has very little flat land. It is just about all rolling hills and mountains. The hills and mountains block the views of far off higher mountains like those in the ski areas. It's hard to explain.

BTW, Here is a website that has a bunch of pix of WV.

Beckley does have a ski area - it's not considered to be much of a ski area -- mountain best for beginners only.

Do people in Scott Depot go to the same schools as kids that live in Hurricane or do they have their own schools? Are all the putnam county schools good or are some better than others?

I'm not really sure about who goes to what elementary etc. in the Teays/Hurricane area - I don't know where the borders are.
Here is a list of schools. Welcome to the Putnam County Schools | West Virginia (Put cursor on Schools)

Ditto for the Middle Schools and High Schools - some kids in the Teays area may go to Hurricane while others go to Winfield.

Winfield and Hurricane High both have great reputations, as well as all the Hurricane/Teays/Winfield schools but I can't comment on which in particular.

My kids went to Poca. Some may think it is not as good as Winfield/Hurricane but we did not find that to be the case. My kids graduated from WVU with Dean's List/etc - 1 in Business and the other with 2 Engineering degrees. The first year they had a bit of the "Frosh Disease" (on own for first time so too much fun and not enough study - didn't come anywhere near failing but did not help their overall GPA. The first year's GPA put a scare in them and they then started buckling down.) So I don't think going to Poca was a detriment to them.

Have you looked in the Oak Hill/Fayetteville area? I think its great place for a family and a brand new Elementry school is set to open soon. Beckley is a nice area too but traffic is usually really heavy up in town.

Thanks for the info. We haven't looked into any area in particular, just happened to find possible job opportunities in Beckley and Hurricane. Is Oak Hill/Fayetteville near Beckley? Are the schools there good? Also was wondering if any of those places have to old downtown section where you can walk around and go to little shops and restaurants?
