MeganAK, I wish I could be at the border to welcome you in! No matter how many times we travel back and forth to VA, each time I see the WV welcome sign I smile! I do not do that on my way back to Northern VA.

You will get there before we do, but we wont be long behind you! yea!!

I live in Martinsburg (now a suburb of DC) and whenever relatives come to visit, they're like "Wow, this really isn't the WV I expected" well, even though Berkeley and Jefferson counties are probably the fastest growing and the most culturally diverse (due to growth from DC) counties in the state, they seriously must have low expectations...LOL! -mmccul

I was also raised in WV and moved to Ca. My accent was thick and when someone would ask where I was from I would say WV and IMMEDIATELY they would look down to see that I had on shoes. I also would get...Oh, my aunt lives in Va. I became a Probation officer and then later taught the same kids. I made a decision to come to Ky. with my daughter and grandsons. It is like home again except I miss the mountains. I am 60 and because of all the negative BS re: WV that I have both experienced and hear, I am going to get a masters in Appalachian studies at Marshall. My goal is to teach teachers on how we must not only instill the pride we have but also to prepare the students to deal with the negativity that they too will be exposed to. I told a teacher where I use to teach, what I planned to do...she said, " why would you waste your time...they are all inbred". When I get discouraged, I think of her response so now I am looking for a clean, cheap, charming, nicely located apt. near S.Charleston MU campus. Does anyone know of one? Please let me know. Thanks

Did you stop to think that much of this ignorant blather from the so called 'Educated is part of the social mantra distilled into young addle brains by the addle brained professors in our Liberal Arts? colleges...

Marxism is spoon fed until they can hate completely on their own...

Default WV Is Okay!

Don't be concerned with the negative perception of WV to the outside world. In fact, I would consider it a blessing in an off handed way. I'm originally from Eastern Long Island (NY) about an hour's ride from Manhattan. Many people on Long Island feel that it is the center of the entire Universe & everything else is "foreign". As a kid, there was no need for ethnic jokes, we had New Jersey to make fun of. "What's the difference between a Jersey Girl & garbage? Garbage gets picked up twice a week!" "Anybody here from Jersey?! Well, get your shoes on & get the Hell out of here!" It's all downhill from there!
My point, Long Island is over populated, over taxed, over priced, under serviced & down wind from New Jersey's Industrial centers. After doing eight years in the Navy, I came home to discover how screwed up L.I. really is & through a few moves & circumstances wound up in New Jersey. After living in New Jersey for 18 years, grew to really love the place. When I went back to L.I. to visit relatives & friends, there were always a fusillade of jokes & negative remarks about NJ. My response was "Really, the joke is all on you!"
Around the mid 90's there was this mass exodus of people from NYC moving to NJ. Many of these people had the option of moving to Long Island rather than NJ. NJ was a much better value in about every context. Unfortunately, the great place I found in Central NJ was "found out" by the NY crowd. After the 9-11 attacks on the WTC, the desire to get out of NYC area was even greater. My wife was working in NYC at the time & I was working in Northern NJ within eye shot of the WTC. The event shook us pretty bad coupled with the fact that we lost two neighbors on our street in the WTC. We decided to retire & sold our home in Edison for an obscene profit & moved to the Pocono's of PA.
Again, the NYC crowd has followed us up here! We have a few isolated areas where the crime is as bad as the South Bronx. Our name for these groups are the "Hoods in the Woods". We love the Pocono's but are considering moving again to get away from this element. This is where West Virginia comes in. When I mention that we're considering the move to my NY relatives, we get all the typical negative stereotypical remarks. On the outside, I look offended. On the inside, I'm grinning ear to ear and saying "Praise Jesus!"
This forum is just part of my research and so far I like what I see. With the economy being what it is, I would probably lose money on my house here when I sell it. So, we're biding our time & will research a great place to retire in WV & sell here when the market improves.
