Elkins will be perfect...the perfect weather bridge out of Alaska...if you get homesick this winter just hike up into the high country and sit out one of our blizzards...
Absolutely the heart of Wv. Congratulations ! For you and US!
Go see Helvetia soon..will take all day and hike down into Stuart Park too...serene...majestic.
I wish we had some elk to graze on that grass in Stuart Park.

Beware! Ice cream is addictive in WV. Don't take my word for it, just pick up the phone and ask to be put on the delivery list for the Schwan's truck.

Oh, good, Alice T, Alaskans ate more ice cream per capita than any other state! I'll be right at home. Well, I already feel right at home! Yesterday we drove over to Spencer, and THAT was beautiful, too! We have been hitting the antique stores almost every day, just looking for kitchen stuff, blacksmithing stuff, and all the stuff we couldn't get in Alaska. What fun!
One of my main observations so far is the absolute friendliness of everyone we have met. People are so helpful and kind and just plain old nice. We got so cynical in Nome that we forgot that other places are not so rotten! We are struck by the wonderful beauty of the land. I love how everyone has a garden, even on the smallest little lot! The most common question so far that we have gotten, is 'Why West Virginia?'. Which is so ironic, of course, because that is what I asked of all of you when I first posted this thread. Thanks for sharing your amazing state with us and we are honored to be able to soon call it home.

Whoa now. Back up a few paces. Do you really think it is wise to tell everyone the things that we residents know about? I mean, are you inviting the really strange people here? Ya know, we do get some weirdo types reading and submitting here (take me, for instance). WV aren't right for everbuddy. Them folks that have been in hostile territory don't need to be coming here and looking away when someone waves at them. We have a selection process and just one failure to return a smile and wave is enough to ban ya from the state. But don't tell everbuddy. They gotta figure it out for themselves.

MeganAK welcome, and I am glad to hear that the job hunt was not too long. You will need to change your AK to WV pretty soon.

MeganAK congratulations on the new job and the move! I've been to WV a couple of times and absolutely love it there.
MaryBeth - you were able to move to WV from Texas? Wow! One more year and hopefully I can move too. I really miss four seasons and hills/mountains, leaves changing in the fall, etc., which Houston really doesn't have. Congratulations on your move too!
Blessings,
pnc
