Retired Navy:
Things being what they are now...I would have graded that crawlspace somehow and sluiced in a layer of concete...if those snakes could get through that wall of stone, I would give them the house.
Bats mean 'no bugs in the house...but their manure is another thing...respiritory problems, ects...they must be captured and be relocated...none of which is a guarantee...they really don't like to give up their home and move..did that one...gave up and the owners let the bats move back in...127 bats!
a good size colony....

Thought I'd post a picture of "Fat Albert". He showed up in my wifes stove this weekend. Had to drag the stove out to the deck and dismantle it before I could get him out. Sent him down to the wood pile!

I hope by the way you're holding it, it's a nonpoisonous snake.

"Fat Albert" looks more like a "Fat Alberta", and tis the season for her to make little ones (usually fat = buns in the oven). Good find. Black ratsnakes are quite the rodent control! Hopefully she was just looking for a place to rest, rather than following rodents into your stove.
If you want to provide a place for her to lay eggs, these guys are pretty shabby nest builders. A pile of wood chips, some sand, or a rotted log all seem to make do. She'll lay them any ol' where and just leave.

Thanks for the insight! I put *her* in the wood pile, a jumble of logs waiting to be split... should be adequate. If she finds her way to the basement, that would be fine. We thought about putting her there, but only after I let her go in the wood pile.

I'll venture a guess on the lady's age...about 4 years old...How 'bout it Newt? Rotten sawdust is a perfect incubator...

I couldn't speculate on age, but she's a young adult. They can easily live into their teens/20's. She'll probably get a little bit bigger yet.
I love these guys. Between me and the boy, we've got like, 6. They're fun 'pets'.

Wow, Newtgirl...I thought they died at about 8 to 10 yrs old...Elmer was just an inch or two shy of 8 feet...How old would she have been? any idea? Elmer has been here since a baby, at least 6 years..slept over the double doors in the basement until she got too big.
You are the resident 'snake expert...and we've needed one.
