Moving to West Virginia Need Info
Hello everyone. I'm moving to West Virginia and I'd like some information on where to find home rentals. I've never been there before so the more people who can chime in the better.
I'm a single mother of three children. I'm hoping to find a place near hospitals, parks, shopping centers, and schools. I'd also like to know how the public transit works.
These are the counties I have to choose from: Logan, McDowell, Mingo, Wayne, and Wyoming County.
I'm not sure which of these counties have more to offer. I believe Wayne county would be the closest to Huntington? Thanks in advance.

I could be mistaken, but I don't think any of those counties has public transit.

I think some parts of Huntington is considered Wayne County. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Oops, you're right. I always think of Huntington as Cabell County.
I did a little Googling, and I came up with the Tri-State Transit Authority (TTA).

You are correct, the Westmoreland section of Huntington is in Wayne County and is a pretty nice area. Huntington is actually the only city in the state that crosses county lines. The twin towns of Ceredo and Kenova are just west of that and are also pretty quaint little towns. Wayne County would put you close to several hospitals, shopping, parks, schools, things to do etc. It would likely be your best bet out of the ones listed. TTA does cover the Westmoreland section of Huntington for transportation as you can see from the routes listed on the link that snorpus gave. In addition to TTA, there is also another public transit that runs on a much smaller scale. It's called the Wayne Express and it runs five days a week to many of the main areas in Huntington. Here's the link for that:
Wayne X-Press Home
Westmoreland would probably be your best bet for convenience and an overall good place to live. If there's anything else I can help you with, just let me know.

Wayne county would be okay, forget the others. If you don't have a car in the other counties you will be bumming a ride or hoofing.

Tim,
I am relocating to west virginia and notice that you seem to been one of the helpful experts in the area I am thinking of renting a place at Waterford Village in Barboursville since during my recent visit I was unable to locate any houses for rent in the area. I will be relocating from the midwest this summer and if you have any other suggestions for me about rental options that would be great!

I used Craig's List and the local paper. There were no rental houses in the university paper = I already checked there. I have some appointments set up, mostly from the newspaper. But I am flying out this week and plan to drive around looking for "for rent" signs.

Waterford is new and very nice but if you want to be a little closer to downtown Huntington, you might consider Seneca Ridge Townhomes. These are brand new and just opening up. There are also the Townhomes of Parkpoint Way as you come into town but these may be full. If you are looking for a house, the best thing to do is drive around the area by Ritter Park. Many of the houses aren't advertised except for a for rent sign in the yard. Hope this helps and here is some contact info for the places above. Let me know if you need anything else like info on restaurants, etc.

A small correction, Tim. Actually, Huntington is one of three towns in WV that are in two counties. Weirton (Brooke and Hancock) and Wheeling (Ohio and Marshall) share that trait.
