moving to wheeling from upstate ny
My wife and I are considering a move to the Wheeling area in the very near future. I will be taking a job in Valley Grove WV and any information would be most helpful such as where NOT to Live and the Best places to live what the cost of rent is . Are there alot of floods and what are the winters like? I love to fish so whats it cost for a license? I am coming from a rural NY town where people are friendly but I pay 4000yr in property taxes so we want to get away from here thank you Bob and Cathy

You're going to find the Wheeling area to be very similar to Upstate NY except that the property taxes in WV are much lower. Like Schenectady and Buffalo, Wheeling was once a great industrial center that has seen better days. Unlike those towns, Wheeling still boasts perhaps the world's best municipal park system.
Valley Grove is essentially rural and is located about 8 miles from Wheeling. If you want to live in a rural area, either Valley Grove or Triadelphia are okay as is West Liberty. Elm Grove is more developed and is only a few miles from there. I would stay away from the downtown part of Wheeling. It just isn't what once it was. You could also go in the other direction from Wheeling (east of Valley Grove) and live in Pennsylvania, but they have high property taxes just like New York.
You will find Ohio County schools to be fairly good, and the Catholic high school in Wheeling is excellent. There are numerous colleges within an easy drive. Pittsburgh and Morgantown are each about an hour away and Washington, PA is just 15 minutes or so to the East.

Thank You for your response. My wife and I have no children so we can live most anywhere. My wife will be looking for employment as an admin assistant and I will be working in Valley grove. We aren't the party type people but do enjoy flea markets shopping riding our motorcycle and making new friends. As for me you could drop me in the middle of no where and I would be happy but my wife needs to be near people and stores. I will be traveling alot and would like to have her in a nice safe neighborhood.I would love to live near the harbor or at least close to fishing without the fear of flooding. This is a hard move for my wife as her family is from here. Mine dont matter. I thought that moving to wv would still be close enough to her family that we could still visit them or they visit us. My father used to come to Wheeling as a young man to visit the country music place but that was 60 yrs ago!! Dang Im getting old!!

If you enjoy riding a motorcycle you will love West Virginia. In my opinion we have some of the most beautiful scenery in the country, especially in the mountains, and it's best viewed from the seat of a motorcycle!!!

go to Intelligencer.com and click on the "contact us" link.
There is a nice public lake located near Valley Grove. "Bear Rock Lake" is great for fishing and is located in that area. There is also good trout fishing in season in the creeks in the area. You can get carp and catfish the size of sharks in the Ohio River, but those are not suitable for eating.

Yes, helmets are mandatory in West Virginia. BTW...remember to have the motorcycle endorsement on your NY license transferred to your WV license. They overlooked it when I moved back from Illinois and by the time I discovered the error it was too late. I had to take the motorcycle test all over again.

RC, ... Valley Grove is a fairly easy commute to Pittsburgh, and there are numerous colleges and businesses in the region... Ohio, WV, and PA. She should be able to find a suitable job.

Is Washington PA only 15 minutes from Wheeling cause google maps says 30 mins. Looking at areas to live so Washington PA is one of them and if it's really 15 mins I will definitely look more into that. Are there any toll roads between Wheeling and Washington PA?
