Huntington and Charleston are both relatively flat where the main cities are with hills around them. The mountains in the western part of the state are not as large as they are in the eastern part of the state but they are still plentiful. Huntington has a VA Hosp. (not sure about Charleston) along with 2 other large hospitals in the city. Healthcare is actually one of the best job markets in Huntington right now. In terms of restaurants, Huntington has a good variety of them, both chain and local with some really good ethnic restaurants as well. Hope this helps.

WV Move
Hello,
I'm facing similar question/decisions that you are too. My husband and I are in our late 40's, tired of the rat-race in NJ; decided that if we wanted a better quality of life, now is the time to make the move. This is my first posting - there seems to be lots of good advice, so I'll wish you well and keep on researching!

Hi, I am also planning a big move over to WV in early 2007. I have family and friends there, yet I find the whole thing veryv daunting. I live in the UK and shall have to not only find a home and a job but also get a licence. Is this very difficult for someone new to the state? Will I need to be a resident for so long before applying? Any information on immigrating would be grately appreciated...I am kinda bashful and the thought of doing all this is stressing me out very much so!
thank you very much!!

Stay away from Charleston...too many drug crimes now and getting worse daily. Huntington isn't better. However, close to Huntington is Ceredo and Kenova. I lived there for many years. Housing reasonable, great schools, crime low, and the police/fire close by. Safe to walk streets, nice churches, and only 15 minutes from Huntington or Ashland, KY to work. Ashland, KY is a good place to work, too. Drive to Charleston about an hour on interstate and about 2 1/2 hours to Beckley. Not so bad, really. I'd strongly suggest Ceredo/Kenova. Different towns, different city governments, but only separated by a set of train tracks. Great, Great, Great place to raise kids. Can't say enough about that. Best place we ever lived for raising kids actually. Try there....plus that short drive to two major cities should net you a job easily. There are also three major medical centers there that hire accountants all the time, plus lots of other businesses including investment firms, etc. Check them out. YOu'll love it there.

Just drove thru Ohio, & WVA, I77, State Rt 50 & I79 ... no drop-offs of any sort, just good highway ... try the road to Yosemite in California, then you're talking dropoffs!

Thanks for the advice...I know Charleston is scary!! I was thinking that Saint Albans seems like a nice neighborhood. Also Teays Valley, Scott Depot and Windfield, though I have heard the house prices are very high??
I also heard that you nearly need to know someone to get a good job, as jobs are few and far between, good ones that is!

citygirl.....I say move...if you move to Wayne County...I will be there...I am moving in the spring from Texas. My family has been in the area for a couple hundred years. My father joined the Air Force which is why we grew up in Texas. I am moving for the peacefulness. I plan on living in the country, not the city, as I don't want to work outside the home. My plan is to teach in the local community college, with Internet courses, plus I will be raising meat goats for a local grocery store chain in WV. I homeschool my kids also. Please don't let the naysayers get you down. By all means don't cut all of your ties where you are at, but move and give it a trial period. 1-2 years to see if it works for you....
In response to the ATV thing....well if it is against the law it shouldn't be done...I am okay with the adults doing it, but leave the kids off the back, or put a helmet on them. If everyone would use common sense, the government would have to make so many laws. But unfortunately, there are always those few who have to ruin it for the rest of us...
Citygirl....please email me at edgeprofservices@yahoo.com, if you want to talk off of the forum....look forward to hearing from you.

I think the days of houses for under 50k are way gone. Maybe you could purchase land and build. Even the mobile homes are going for more than that unless you want a park you might be able to get one then.

I disagree. Please check realtor com. Theres houses under $10k but in bad condition. Hundreds of nice $50k houses, I just need to know which town or city is the best. I would never pay $50k for a mobile home when I can get a real house for that!
