I have a wonderful town for you
You will thank me eventually ifyou take my advice and move your family to Historic Hinton . We are centrally located between Bluefiled Beckley and Lewisburg. We ahve had a recent boom inhousing so that houses are all now hovering around the 50K mark-for years one could get hosues for around 35K. The crime rates here are low, the Beautiful New River GOrge cuts through the middle of town and just upriver the Greenbrier and Bluestone Rivers offer fishing hiking camping and a great place for kids. Our town taxes arel low and there are opurtunities in the technologym tourism and treansportation sectors as well as four bigger citites well within a reseanoable commuting distance away. We are just isolated enough not to draw the big city criminals and drug problems, We do have some small town issues but all in all we are a great place to raise kids and make a living, Dont Overlook Hinton when you think about moving to WV.

I lived in Flatwoods, WV for a year. The schools were good, the people friendly. I think in was near Beckley. I loved the snow. The thing I remember most about WV, it didn't matter where you went, it all looked the same.

Moving to Hinton
I have been looking in the Hinton area, but am wondering if it is too isolated for a single older person (who will have family visiting frequently). I want to be in the mountains and experience seasons (snow!) after years in South Texas. It is a small town - are there available good mechanics, computer repairpersons, handymen, chimney sweeps, etc? Or do Hinton residents go to Beckley for many such services? Is there cable available around Hinton? DSL? Phone service with unlimited LD? I want the beauty of the country but the convenience of modern conveniences!
Just learned that license tags for automobiles are a killer. In Texas we pay about $60/year. That's not the case in WV. How about auto insurance? Is it high? What does a cord of cut wood, delivered, cost?
Would appreciate input. Thanks.
Sunny South Texas

Elkins
I live in Elkins and I love it. The city government finally seems to be working and cooperating with the county commission to better the county. The railroad yard with its shipping history which pretty much created Elkins and has since died is now being turned into a very lucrative tourist attraction as a tourist train. Check out the Tygart Flyer. The area between Elkins and historic Beverly is packed full of commercial businesses along a 5 lane highway. Yet there are many nice, quiet family neighborhoods. Check out the Weese Street Addition, or South Elkins. Both are very nice neighborhoods. Elkins is just outside a recreational smorgasbord with 3 ski resorts, the monogalia nat. forest, numerous camping, rock climbing, and rafting options.

WV a great place to be!
I am not sure what part of WV you are looking for, but Lewis County is right in the middle of the state. I would be more than happy to send you information about our area. We just recently produced a video that will give you some insight about our area.
Yes, WV does have some minor problems, but it is a great place to live.
Please email me at lcinfo@lcchamber.org for more info or stop by the Lewis County Convention and Visitor Bureau's website at www.stonewallcountry.com.
Good luck!

"VERY rural mountain type people..friendly, but not welcoming I like to say. clannish . "
I was struck by that comment for two reasons: Being raised here and having lived all over the United States, I've always said that WV'ians are helpful, but not really friendly. If we see you stranded on the side of the road, we'll stop and help, but when we see you in the grocery store, we won't stop and chat.
WV'ians are, indeed, mountain people. And like any of the mountain people I've met in North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and elsewhere, we are indeed a clannish lot. But there are many reasons for that. Mountain people, as a rule, are good folks. But they've had to depend on themselves and their own for a long time. Historically speaking, the only time most outsiders show any interest in WV is when they want to either ravage her lands or exploit her people. As you can imagine, this tends to make one wary after a while. So, please, before you condemn us for clannishness, bear in the mind the history that goes behind it.

moving to WV
Hi! I grew up in Bluefield, and my mother still lives there. I have a feeling that we may be of the same generation. I have lived in Knoxville, Nashville, and now I am raising a family outside of Boston. I came upon this board when i was trying to find a mover that may be able to bring some of mom's dining room furniture up to me. Anyway, Bluefield has poor economic growth, although many companies are betting more on Bluefield VA. You cant beat Southern WV for beauty, skiing, and white water rafting, and just a few hours drive from Myrtle Beach, Blue Ridge Mountains, North Carolina and The Great Smoky Mountains. Roanoke would be a metro area that has "suburbs" like Blacksburg or Radford that are great choices. All the relatives are from that area, and I MISS it GREATLY. let me know if you have any questions i can help with. I am curious if you graduated from BHS.
