Default moving back to wv

Hey there, fellow hillbillys! I am an original hillbilly transplanted in Florida for the past 20 years and am seeking to get back to the beautiful mountains of WV. I am considering the Charleston area, but would like info on any of the surrounding areas as well. I have a possible job working for Chase bank and am interested in knowing the best schools, and where to find a serene and peaceful place to live out in the country, preferably looking down into the valley. What is the expected rent? Taxes etc that one can look forward to paying? Are there still any late 30-40ish people left around? I have been traveling up there on and off every year, and still can't get the place out of my mind. Recently divorced, I also want to be able to relocate knowing that there might be some folks my age to develop friendships with in the good ole mountain state. Thanks for the info!!

I have friends who are considering moving to Falling Waters...the husband's parents want to do the move too. We have talked about it as well because we just can't handle the cost of living and allergies up here in NY but I am very concerned reading all these posts. I DO mind an area where everyone is lighting up considering both my sons have asthma so are there any areas of WV where people take pride in their health and appearance and health care is good?

Thank you for your answer
I grew up around Winfield, WV. It is between Huntington and Charleston so you could actually work either place. There schools in the county are very nice. The other surrounding town are Poca, Hurricane, Buffalo, Eleanor, St. Albans, and Cross Lanes.

It is illegal in almost every WV county to smoke in ANY public buidling or establishment, including restaurants and bars... Sooo your sons should be ok. There are a few countys where its still not illegal. Cabell county, due to Marshall U, college kids love to drink and smoke evidently... and a few others. But most countys are smoke free indoors.

I am from NJ looking to move to WVa. My main area of interest is the Mercer County area. I've seen some negative feedback regarding Bluefield. Is their much positive? I fell in love with the area on vacation and it really does stick in my mind. Currently I'm obtaining a certification for Pharmacy and studying to be a Biological Lab Tech. Would there be any real opportunity for someone like me? I've been studying the area but I feel no one knows as well as the locals.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

For some reason many of the bloggers from that area settle in and give better praise for Princeton...could be because it's the larger urban area...and wider valley to develop new businesses.. it's just up the road from Bluefield and a short drive...a person could work in both places easily...but I'm not a local...someone will comment for you...

You may want to start a new post asking about Mercer Co/Bluefield - sometimes people won't look at an older post as much to see the latest postings.

isis I'm an ex ny'r from downstate who moved to WV. I'm exceptionally happy here. I'd like to point out a rotten attitude that you can keep right where you are.

Are there any areas of upstate NY where people take pride in mental hygiene and common decency?

WV'rs are too polite to tell you how obnoxious you're being. I, on the other hand, feel no moral compunction to refrain. When people like yourself speak, I'm deeply ashamed to admit where I'm from. I've been to just about every state in the union and they all tell me... gee, you don't seem anything like the (Isis) stereotype.

I have serious doubts that you're prepared to locate to any culture different than your own 4 walls. This is not an HOA state, nor will it ever be. The motto is "montani semper liberi" meaning mountaineers are always free. You're free to take responsibility for yourself, but I can assure you, WV be not be clear cutting it's forests to suit your asthmatic children over pollen season. Think again before you move anywhere or you'll be miserable, and anyone listening miserable, wherever you land. Look in the mirror first before abusing anyones good will and decent natures.

The irony has escaped you that a NY'r came to the WV forum seeking help with insults on her lips and now has to get an education about the life threatening illness of her own children, all the while wondering if health care is dicey anywhere! Why didn't you know that parental mgmt in the home is crucial, and that no amount of quality/quantity health care can substitute a responsible parent? Why didn't your upstate doctors tell you, or did you fail to pay them the proper amount of chickens for services rendered? That wasn't very respectful of a downstater to say to an upstater, now was it? That's just what your attitude is all about. A subtle crime that erodes the general civility throughout USA, killing the very thing that could have helped you most. Dare to disrespect the house of your brother, you'll reap the consequences.

The 3 min google homework you left for someone else to do regarding the health of your children:
International Climates and Asthma | December 1999 | RT for Decision Makers in Respiratory Care
Asthma - The Effects of Climate and Altitude - Asthma Symptoms, Relief Therapies, Treatment and Medications on MedicineNet.com
ASTHMACAPITALS.COM
Hypoallergenic Bedding: A Guide to the Dust Mite and Allergy Free Bed

The consensus among western medicine here and abroad is that you should not be moving away for the sake of asthma because it's all for naught. WV is not on the map of hot spots for NOX pollution, but concentrated population problems are likely to happen in the eastern panhandle the more people & cars pile in. Being an informed patient, actively managing control through medication and cleanliness/climate controls in your own home are the only real defenses. Health care professionals in all states know, because if you mean to practice medicine in USA, you're required to pass through rigorous standards that are universally applicable. Doctors in WV get no reduced requirements just because this state hasn't contributed more than NY to GDP. WV has been a part of the USA pretty early on.

Just because WV didn't have anti smoking laws on the books for years doesn't mean it was ever acceptable for employees to smoke at chuck E cheese. People were not walking around with cigarettes in their mouths at the supermarket, in church, at the dinner table, or in schools prior to laws being formally legislated. The unwritten standard of allowing individual venues to decide what was appropriate and common courtesy from smokers was enough.

Once you sincerely apologize to these folks for your ugly american nonsense, in the spirit of WV hospitality, I'd be more than happy to go to direct message and help you out with specifics. It would spare you any further public embarrassment of my blunt language. While I can empathize with being caught between elderly parents and children who need you, their worst handicap shouldn't be you. Did you know that older seniors decline psychologically and physiologically when you move them? Will you blame WV 3 yrs from now for what nature dictates to us all? Insist on holding onto your unqualified attitudes, you've made yourself unworthy to be a resident before you ever came into this forum. Refuse to change yourself, you'll only propagate the very same things you're running away from where ever you may go.

Anyone else reading this post, WV isn't hostile to outsiders, and generally speaking has a live and let live attitude from it's origins right up to present tense. I say this as an adopted outsider welcomed into their homes. Bring grief here, they'll naturally reject you the same way any community in any state of our union would. Know thyself is crucial to find your best fit. Expect utopia? The last known location of the garden of eden is somewhere in the middle east, and good luck with that plan! Relocating to something and not running away from something is the horse sense you need to mind as decision makers. I wish you all find your happiness.

Figure this poster is long gone but if not, a word of advice ....
to get along with people in WV I'd recommend you not come to it with a nasty attitude toward the people.

Want to think WV is a very unfriendly state -- just move here with a snobby and ugly attitude. If you don't like the people of the state, don't move here. West Virginians don't want people like that moving here.
