Jerry West represents the very best of what is West Virginia. He's a remarkable, humble, and accomplished person whe prefers to not be in the limelight. It is rumored that over the years he has given millions of dollars anonymously to his beloved Alma Mater.
Among his attributes that I most admire is the fact that he never, ever,
forgets his roots or people that have helped him in life. He (and some of
his college team mates) remained very close to his former landlady
in Morgantown throughout her life, considering her a second mother.
He's just a really good human being.
I played high school and college b-ball in my earlier years. Jerry West was the class of the NBA from the late 50's to early 70's. He was the Michael Jordon on the court then. I was just in awe what he could do on the court.
And it doesn't surprise me what he does off the court. A good friend of mine was a big Lakers fan back then. He told me that West was by far VERY giving of his time when it came to signing autographs. He was an all-pro player, and is an all-pro person.
I have been reading his new biography, and it's excellent!
