The working conditions in West Virginia are up to parr, it is the hiring practice that stinks. If you know someone that has a foot in the door you have it made. A college degree does nothing for you. It is all about who you know and something has to be done about it.

Such as ???

Do you perhaps propose a Federal Department of Employment Anti-Favoritism? Or would a state-level bureau do?

As noted here often, West Virginians are culturally (and perhaps genetically) distrustful of outsiders (and for good reason). If I'm hiring, knowing the applicant's family and friends allows me to make a judgment about how much to trust the prospective employee.

I think thats all over..NY,NV,CO,NE and I'm sure a "few" more. Fortunately, I was able to retire in 06 but my significant other will have that challenge when we move to WV.( by the way still have our home and land on the market, just lowered prices in hopes of things moving) I guess one way to look at it would be when you do land that "job" it will be on account of your qualifications, personality, etc. and not about who you know and I would think that would make you feel pretty good about yourself.........lifes a challenge.......

Well you never know who you are passing up by just hiring those you know. Sometimes the loyalty is stronger from a stranger than from a friend or relative.

I am really astounded by all of the Negative feedback, especially from West Virginians. My wife and I are a couple of those "outside" folks from Virginia. We fell in love with West Virginia almost 19 years ago, so much so that we bought property outside Elkins and built a beautiful retirement home there. We have wonderful neighbors (in fact, one of them is a home builder and built our home!) and have yet to meet a "not so nice person". I am sure that they are there, as they are Everywhere, but as a whole, we have not had any problems with the "locals". I think that is probably due to the fact that we realize that we are in a unique part of the country and that we are, indeed, "outsiders" as yet. The thing, though, is that we tend not to run our mouths off and make it like we are better than West Virginians, as I suspect is the case with most "outsiders". We have cultivated a very good relationship with all of our neighbors and, according to a couple of them, have a good, positive reputation with them. We understand that West Virginia is different. We also understand that we are not better than West Virginians for, once all is said and done, we are All Human Beings and should be treated as such. We do not look down our noses at the Natives. We respect them as human beings and people just like us-trying to make a go of it in a hostile and sometimes unforgiving world. We love West Virginia, the mountains, the people, and will be Proud, when the time comes, to be called West Virginians!

One does not matriculate from Harvard, Yale, etc. One is matriculated at Harvard, Yale, etc. You could look it up (if you own a dictionary).

My point exactly...yes, I do own several dictionaries and thesauraus's...and I'm satisfied with my spelling too..

I'm also my own boss...I've fired myself several times...given myself time off...and in a spirit of generosity, hired myself back...

I choose not to look it up....

What is so predictable about Liberals...?

When they cannot use their limited wit for a comeback, they resort to abuse and criticism...Why is that?

Is it part of the 'Entitlement mentality?

I drank half a glass of Irish Whiskey for Ted Kennedy today...the reason?

Ted was only half a man. God help him now.

Somebody asked me today what I thought about Ted Kennedy's passing. I said- Well, reminds me of one his famous quotes, if I recall he was overheard at a bar one late afternoon saying-

"BAH-TENDAH!!! I have 3 things to say to yooo... Chivas, Rocks, Big-Gulp Cup... and make it snappy, I have a hot date I'm late fohr!!"
