question on car sales tax (to rent, live, moving to)

First, thanks everyone for putting up with all my questions....and heres yet another one....we've been told when moving to WV you will have to pay a sales tax on registering your car as if you just bought it...and if so what is the sales tax, and I would imagine that would be onthe market value...is there a grace period??? Once again thank-you...just trying to gather all the info. we can before we move so theres no shock, when we get there...

It's called a personal property tax, and must be paid before you can register your car in WV, and every year thereafter.

Yes, it's based on the market value of the vehicle, but I'm not sure if they use Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds, or another source.

A person has 30 days to complete registration of a vehicle and establish residency...

Citation is a Misdemeanor and begins your police record here. Speeding tickets (not contested), DUI's all contribute to your police record as misdemeanors..reason for that...everybody must be accounted for...the good, the bad and the ugly.

Don't be in any hurry to pay for license. I have a friend that has lived here for 3 years, been pulled over twice (state police) and still has out of state tags. And out of state drivers license.

If you're going to rent when first moving, I'd not change plates or DL until you have your permenant addy.
