Randolph County relocation?
Hello All,
I have been lurking for months on the WV threads now, and am trying to isolate a few good areas to search for some summer home property which we hope to retire to permanently in 8 yrs. or so. I think that I have narrowed it down to Randolph County, but Pocahontas, Barbour, and Greenbrier look promising too. I guess what I am asking for is HELP.
We would like 5+ acres (as much as possible), around 2,000 ft in elevation for the 4 season weather. With 4 hours to Pittsburgh (hubby is a native). Lots of opportunity for safe kayaking (not neccessarily white water)nearby. Great clean air & water in abundant supply. Non flood plain. A smallish, safe town, with a vet, quilt shop, and nice shopping district (no malls necessary), with a few nice places to eat, movie theater, bowling, and a local community theater. We must at least have a view of a mountain, but no steep driveway as we want to watch our future grandchildren frolic safely. Must have a good medical center within 30 minutes drive too, as hubby needs followup for his heart condition.
We would like to spend in the 100-120K range. Do you think that this is possible?
Thanks for any input that you might have!

The listings with your needs will be rare in Randolph county, and probably sell quick.
I noticed a few listed here. We were shown a home through 2crhomes and best find a competant agent first.
Welcome to All Seasons Real Estate Service
As far as your other requirements; have heard a few good reports about the hospital in Buchanon. Do NOT go to the one in Elkins, ever. End of debate, maybe end of life as you know it...
There are a few places decent to eat. A few.I've lived here since last Oct and have had 3 decent meals. Humbertos (Mexican), Mama's Kitchen and Burger King.
Nice shopping? The wife and me do Walmart & Tractor Supply locally, anything beyond that we go to Buchannon & Bridgeport... & of course, the internet. Your shopping requirements may be different.
There is bowling, theater, and rivers nearby (Tucker & Pocahontas county have nice rivers).
Oh, just noticed you stated 8 years from now. The home prices won't change much by then. Nothing much has changed since i left here in '79 anyways. Thirty years of change in Randolph county equal 7 months of growth in civilization. That has its good points and bad.
When you are ready to buy, just Google "elkins wv realty".

By all means, don't forget to check out towns on the Cheat River...Parsons, St. George, Rowlesburg.
Great little out of the way places that fit your criteria. Rowlesburg and Parsons being our favorites.
Buy now while you can still get a place.

I've never understood why some people bash Davis Memorial in Elkins. I've only received great care there. I was the kid the parents were constantly rushing to the emergency room for stitches, broken bones, etc and when I show people my scar from my appendectomy I had when I was 18 they are in amazement at how small it is. The cardiovascular care is actually a branch of Mon.General in Morgantown. There is a cardiologist permanently in Elkins but they also bring down several of the Morgantown physicians 2-3 times weekly.
Randolph or Barbour would be your closest options to Pittsburgh. I know the layout of Kennywood like the back of my hand ha ha. Once you learn your way around the highways you can be there in 2 - 2.5 hours easily.
Elkins has nicer places to eat than fast food too. I would never consider Burger King nice..... Graceland on D&E's campus is amazing, I highly recommend it. The 1863 Tavern, Umbertos, and the River Car Restaurant are pretty good too. There is also a larger restaurant being built in the railyard with a railroading theme. There are two-three options for theater venues. Davis and Elkins College puts on some great productions, as well as Elkins High School in my opinion. There is also the Old Brick Playhouse on Davis Avenue, and the American Mountain Theater on Railroad Avenue.
I can't see why anyone would go to Buckhannon to shop for anything, besides to get something at Lowes. Elkins has everything they have if not more in terms of the shopping. Never really been to Greenbrier so I don't really know what the shopping is like down there but Elkins is the hub for Barbour, Pocahontas and the other surrounding counties for shopping, health care, etc.
Obviously I'm a Randolph County native... so I'm somewhat biased.

Yea, it shows. Go to college, move to the real world and return here in several decades.
You'll notice how skewed some of your opinions may be. And for the older folks who have issues beyond stitches, praising DMH is seriously not good. You could be ******* with someone's life.
I could go on & on & on, but i'm not derailing this thread like the local meth head would by being a babbling idiot. That's another thread...

Well I am in college... I'm probably moving to Phoenix after I graduate... not sure if I'll actually return...
Obviously you've had a bad visit at DMH but personally I've always received excellent care and several members of my family work there, and my mother actually worked for North Central Cardiology... so I'm pretty well acquainted with the healthcare system there.
Who is the meth head?

Thanks to all of you. We were actually up touring your beautiful area just this past week. Randolph/Upshur/Barbour counties are definitely what we are looking for. I went up to Parsons, but that is just too remote for us.
I am enchanted with the idea of living in this beautiful place.
