Debt is dumb
Debt is dumb, cash is king and the paid off home mortgage has taken the place of the BMW has the status symbol of choice.

me too! I need to see the King, will NEVER pay off this house before DH retires, so will put it on market in the next yr, more to an apartment, pay off house in WV and wait for retirement. NEVER wanted a BMW but would like to drive this jeep till it ticks over 200,000 and then some!

I just got a mortgage for the first time, and there is NO king here. But I would be even more stupid to keep throwing money away on rent.

I got a mortgage too. But it's cheaper than Morgantown rent, so I feel good about it. Subaru is my BMW, but I'll pay cash when the time comes that one of my current vehicles needs replaced. Anybody interested in buying a Hyundai XG350L with 107k miles? The answer is always 'no.'

Hey BJC, thanks! It's super cool! We originally wanted land. Then we decided after being in Nome another winter, that maybe we could get a house, and then buy land later. When we got here, we looked at houses on some property, but our price range just wasn't going to get us anything but land and a piece of junk that might have been a house at one point. So we decided since we are new to the area, we would just get a house in town, one that we could live in for 5-10 years while we search for our land and build something on it. We were driving around one day after spending a week looking at crummy houses, and we stopped by one for sale by owner. It's great! It has a HUGE lot (for town, anyway), and a double car garage for my hubby to play in, three bedrooms, wood floors, the original old wood trim (but new electrical and plumbing), it is perfect! We knew right away that it was home. So now, of course, we just wait. We thought it would be easier to camp once we had a projected move-in date, but it actually got much harder. Now we just want it to be over (the camping, that is). Anyway, thanks for asking. It is a house that we can definitely be happy in for a long time. And eventually, we can get some land and have a get-away.
