If this thread is going to become a small pot-pouri of disconnected comments, I will add two.

Roanoke, ie: Roan oak or Red oak...a location according to legends lost in history where the sorrowful remains of the settlers of Sir Walter Raliegh's colony wandered inland and disappeared.

2. Near Ireland, Wv, where road bowling is popular with their little area fair/festival.

I have heard this fumble numerous times when i did 2 years of college out there. I would say i go to school out in west virginia, then id get "oh really, down near radford or vatech?" and i was like yeah...exactly, but not.

Also i remember distinctly watching a WVU game and the sports announcer on tv said im here in Morgantown, Western Virginia! just change the name to WBG. (west by god)

When I gave my address over the phone to a utility company as "West Virginia" the customer service rep said, "Now, sir, is it really necessary to add 'West' to it?"

I was visiting some people in northern PA who got out a map of Virginia and said, "Show us where you live." I said, "Okay, I will if you get out the correct map."

I was eating dinner with my aunt and uncle in Huntington, WV when the phone rang. It was some people she had met in New York, at a pay phone, saying, "We are in Richmond. Are we close to you?"
