Originally, the Hillbillies were Scots-Irish (supporters of the Protestant King, William of Orange).

Or they were Germans (Wilhelm --> Willy --> Billy)

Or it just makes a nice rhyming phrase.

Our insurance agent in Elkins is ethnically Polish, on my fathers side I have Scottish and Dutch ancestry. Mom's side is German/Italian mostly. There are also several Swiss settlements in Randolph County. The largest and still intact is Helvetia (sounds like hell-vish-ah) in southern Randolph County. Also there was a congregation of Swiss settlers where we live now, a small community called Alpena, about 10 miles east of Elkins on 33.

Many of those 18 th century Germans and French came from the Alsace region where the borders were changing about every 20 years...Wars by Catholics against Protestants made peace impossible and the opportunity to own land existed in the new land. Some had even taken refugee status in Holland before coming here.

As small enclaves began to succeed, those groups sent letters and money to the homeland and brought family here..
sound familiar? It's still being done, Cubans, Mexicans, Indians, Asians.

If they can get them out of their native lands, they are bringing them here.
