Nurses are saying that they've never seen people come into the hospital and be intubated so quickly with the flu like they are having to do with the H1N1. The CMHS student who died had been to the Emergent care the day before he went into the hospital and the x-ray of his lungs was completely clear. In less than 24 hrs, his lungs had nearly filled with fluid. If anyone gets the H1N1, remember to limit your time laying flat and try to prop yourself up in bed, even at night. It's not the H1N1 itself that kills people, it's the subsequent pneumonia.

We began this thread hoping to inform the population of this medical situation.
I would call the county health department and see if they will share information...what I'm seeing with the media is a freeze on information...
Maybe they are not interested...or it's not that severe...????
The absentism is beginning to show at the public service businesses...our bank branch had 3 off work with the flu...the line took about 10 minutes to get to a teller...

I think it's pretty severe in some areas. I know that in Ritchie County, there are a lot of kids out sick with the flu. One parent said 6 kids in her daughter's elementary school class were sent home on Thursday with pretty bad symptoms. My daughter is in the high school at Doddridge and she said so far, there have't been a lot of children sick. I think David is right, the media is not reporting, but I think the freeze is coming from the health deptartments. They don't want a panic on their hands.
The CDC, according to this news report, CDC: 76 Kids Dead Of Swine Flu As Cases Rise - News Story - WTOV Steubenville, says that 76 children have died so far from complications from H1N1. They also say that normally, the regular flu kills between 46 and 88 children a year,
From what I've read on news reports, most of the children who have died have gotten secondary infections, after receiving medical treatment at quick cares or emergency rooms. A nurse from Huntington posted on wsaz that most children arriving in the ER didn't receive proper care when they first got the flu. Not enough rest, fluids and staying in bed resting. That didn't surprise me. A lot of parents are still sending their kids to school sick.

With the single parent working, almost no other situation exists to care for the child...The school system is it.
Anybody hearing anything about quarantine?
We certainly had it years ago with the German Measel epidemic.
Our house had a Quarantine sign.
After we all had the disease, the Health Department came and removed it from the front door...
3 kids...That was over a month of work for my parents.. We did our school work at home...in a darkened room I believe.
luckily, Mom was a 'stay at home mom...

I still see enough kids as well as adults, who have walked out of the rest rooms without washing their hands.

My 10 year old came down with a flu on Sunday morning. We've been fighting to keep her temp below 104 since then. Today it's finally staying below 101. Now my 12 year old came home sick today. I don't know if it's the H1N1 that they have or another flu, but it's a nasty one!
The kids Dr. said there are several types of flu and a stomach virus going around.
The Wetzel County paper had an article in it about quarentine and how the Health Dept does have that authority still. Don't worry about us. We aren't leaving our houses until we are better. Don't need the govt to tell us that one!
In my kid's school, the teachers are monitoring each bathroom to make sure the kids wash. I bet that's not the highlight of their day!
