I know a couple of people who got SS disability for being "nervous" - they classified it as Mental disability. One of them was in her early 30's and was a bank teller that had a bad relationship with her husband, divorced him and didn't want to work so she became all depressed and nervous and her doctor signed the papers for her to get SS. Pitiful, just pitiful.

The disability program is complicated and concerns people's age, education, impairments and past work and I'm sure there's more to these people's problems than the obvious and what people can see.

I am sorry for not being more specific why my neighbor is getting a disability check, I will make this more clear. My neighbor is getting a check for a "bad back", and I think it's just bs we all have to work our asses off while this guy works under the table and can perform house hold daily duties, work on cars & etc.

Charleston_man,

this is the reason our insurance costs are skyrocketing. People do commit insurance fraud. Then again there are also people on a disability claim that's legit. If you think he is receiving disability fraudulently Report him/her. The insurance company (how ever slow) will investigate.

best of luck and god save the republic

Here's how it works:

Faker gets lawyer..
Applies for disability benefits and is denied two times...
Applies again and goes before a Judge for a bench judgement...
Judge rules in the Faker's favor...
Goverment issues the BIG check...(from the Origion date of application, about 3 years)
Faker pays this entire amount to the lawyer and begins recieving his monthly benefit..
Everyone is happy.
Faker gets blue parking pass and moves to Park Place.

If he does this constantly, yes, BS. If it's occasional no it's not.

My husband is on disability. He had 3 doctors for a year telling him he needed to retire and file or wind up paralyzed or dead. He's had 2 heart attacks, a stroke, 6 surgeries, is on 13 daily meds (some of them he takes 4 times a day) and has migraines that never go away - ever. They just vary in intensity. And yet he found disability for a year with all that.

He goes weeks at a time where he can't get out of bed. But every now and then he has a good day and with enough pain medication can mow part of the yard or rake some leaves. And for him, doing that is so important. He's a major workaholic and being 'disabled' has been a crushing psychological blow to him.

So please don't assume that because you see someone mowing their yard or raking leaves occasionally that they shouldn't be on disability. There is no way he could hold a job and be out for weeks at a time when he's in so much pain, let alone hold a job with the massive amounts of medication he's on.

This person I am talking about, makes everyday deliveries and performs everyday tasks just like able bodied people do.

Angry typical ignorant 'conservative' viewpoints

I'll start off by saying that I am not toomie, I'm her husband. I worked full time since I was 17, and I am now 46. That makes me active in the workforce for 29 years, almost continuously. I paid Social Security taxes including disability during the entire time - and I was spouting the same crap as you.

At the time, I was a REAL conservative, otherwise known as a libertarian, not a phony bible thumping hypocrite who loves deficit spending on wars and guns and loves to take government money when they call it "faith based initiatives" and it goes into Christian churches and orgs.

In March 2006, My wife and I were coming back from the vet when I felt a sharp stinging sensation behind my left ear. I felt strange, like someone had whacked me with a hammer. I managed to get outside and the sensation drained from the left side of my body. I thought I was having a stroke.

I told my wife this and told her to get me to the ER NOW. The hospital was only 3 minutes away. I managed to get in under my own power and got to see the triage nurse. her asking me questions was the last thing I remember.

From now on I am relying on what my wife and family have told me.

I fell sideways out of the chair I was in and broke my left shoulder when I hit the floor. I started having tonic-clonic siezures nonstop, and instantly became the center of the attention in the E.R. They stabilized me to where they could get me up and get me a CAT-scan. I then had another seizure
and the decision was made to life-flight me on the chopper to Georgetown
University Hospital. I was in critical condition. The CAT-scan had revealed a large golf ball sized tumor on the right side of my brain.

I was kept in a state of suspended animation in the ICU for 3 days. When they woke me up, I was still rated as critical. I had a terminal brain tumor, chance of survival slim to none. Grade 3 anaplastic astrocytoma, one step down from the worst possible grade.

They performed brain surgery on me to try to as much of the tumor as possible. They got 85% of it, but could not get it all. From then on the usual treatment of chemo and radiation. I had to go to radiation every day.

I was told at most I had 6 months to live and to get my affairs in order.

Fast forward to today. I have lived 3 years longer then they said I would, and all of it on this SS Disability you conservative Pharisees say you hate.
I have many lingering side effects from my brain surgery, including seizures and the need to take large amounts of anti seizure medications to combat them which have their own side effects. I take about 20 pills a day.

my left hand is useless for any real work as using it for long induces trouble. Cant type with it for example.

If it were not for Social Security Disability, I would have lost my house and everything I owned. After paying into the system for 29 years, I only get less than a thousand a month to live on, and I damn sure paid more than that into it while I was working. I haven't even begun to get my own money back, much less any of your money.
Your claims that I'm costing you tax money are uninformed. You don't even understand how the system works! You're not qualified to even have an opinion on the issue.

I'm as legit as they come with my disability 'claim' - my medical records speak for themselves. I'll tell ya what, I'll stop painting conservatives with a broad brush that may not apply to all of them, when you stop painting all disability receivers as fakers and liars.

I now return you to my wife, who is the single most reason I'm still here. her love has kept me alive so far. I can only hope that I will live long enough to actually start taking some of your actual money you're paying in.

I'd get a lot of satisfaction out of that.

Wow, what a post. Sorry for all your troubles. Disability is like a lot of things. tort reform, every one hates that until they have something happen to them. And some people can tell a person's medical condition just by looking at them. I assume you are on Medicare. Thankfully disability is there to take care of you. Good wishes to you and your wife.

To the original poster SS disability is a federal program.

Toomie:

I've had three dear friends die from brain cancer tumors...I thought nobody could survive that.

Thanks for the inspiration of your story.
