Black Panthers
I just got home from a short trip at my mountain cabin,on Short Mountain in Agusta WVA. A guy tells me that he has seen a black panther recently. My question is ,has anyone here ever seen anything like that in that area.I have a hard time believing it,but a show on tv called Monster Quest had video of a panther in this state but did not say where in the state. Also anyone see any wolves?

I saw the same Monster Quest show. I got the impression (I don't think they ever did say explicitly) that the video was from the Romney-Noorefield-Petersburg area.
If I remember correctly, analysis of the video was pretty conclusive that it was just an ordinary domestic cat, black in color.

In pioneer times the black panther was a common problem...killed the chickens and small farm animals and would attack children. Children began household chores at the age of 3 in those times.
A hollow near Grant Town, Wv is named Panther Lick....from old pioneer times, I'm sure.
In those days, efforts 'Hunts were done often to eradicate the wolf, bear and other creatures harmfull to domestic survival.
Its possible in Wv that a few families of black panthers have survived but they are more common in the Florida wilderness areas. The rocky formations of the mountains near Moorefield and Romney would be a perfect habitat for them...
It's my guess they are part of the federal restocking process...
Eastern Mountain lion....any word on that Snorpus? Extinct? Good thread going here...for sure!

The term 'Black Panther' is quite often used in connection with large black cats - however there is no one distinct species of wildcat called a 'Black Panther'. Over the years it has become used as a common name that can be applied to any large black-coated cat. When you see a picture of a 'Black Panther' it is most likely that you are looking at either a Leopard or possibly a Jaguar with Melanistic coloration.
(Note: There is no documented evidence of the existence of a melanistic Florida Panther. Information in this answer is from the web site Big Cats Online. )

There is also a videotape of a confirmed black panther which was filmed in SW Pendleton Co, WV in January, 2005 by a farmer Jason Bowers.
.
.
Additional tracks of a confirmed mountain lion were found in the Smoke Hole Wilderness Area of Grant County, an ideal habitat which has long been rumored to have mountain lions and black panthers as inhabitants for over 100 years.
