Charleston (South Charleston: live, vs, airport)

Could someone give me some information about the topography of the Charleston area? Is it pancake flat, or is there some roll to the land.

Charleston proper is along the Kanawha River plain, and is pretty flat. South Charleston has a fairly narrow strip of flats along the river, but is mostly hilly. Go any distance (say a mile or more) away from the river, and its generally rolling to hilly. Google Maps has a terrain feature that shows the topography of an area.

The City is snug in the valley, while the hills inclose it.

Roughly . . the mass of Charleston and surrounding muncipalities in the valley winding along the Kanawah River are at about 350 feet above sea level, surrounded by mountains to approximately 800 feet above sea level (gets higher going east and south, which is, towards the Eastern Continental Divide . . lower altitude going west and north).

I live "in" the city of Charleston, at 650 feet above sea level. There's at least 100 feet (or more) behind me.

Off-topic note :
When booking airline reservations, make sure you have the correct Charleston. Not kidding they may default to an error and book you or your visiting family to South Carolina.

Elsewhere, I've heard this place called, "Charlie West".

You would think these errors could not happen, but elsewhere, I was at check-in to go to the Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow (Russia), and the airline personnel booked me to Sarajevo (Bosnia). Pays to dot your i's and cross your t's when it comes to flights.

Charley West is correct or even CRW the airport designation for Charleston WV vs Charleston NC. Like you, I have heard of people being sent to the wrong Charleston because they didn't say the state name.
