Retail oportunities are coming to Martinsburg. Go to the "New Target Store" thread for more info.
Good news, I must admit I recently returned from the Burg' and noticed some improvements. The Daily Grind is still the best coffee shop and of course the new building going on in Spring Mills.
The only down items were the Mall, which seems to be heading south and of course downtown.
All in all, I will state that I was rather impressed.
I live in downtown M'burg. Not much to do other than BW3's, Outback and strip clubs after dark. There are two bars downtown and a couple of restaurants. Only one stays open past 10PM. Please don't feed the beggars, it encourages them. Everything else is in Berkely County, Jefferson County, Hagerstown MD or back toward DC.
Culpepper IS NOT suburban, it is RURAL.
The place is 75 miles from DC, not at all suburban.
People think everytime 1-2 subdivisoons come it means the area's character has changed, it has slightly been altered but is still way out there.
Fauquier is rural so why would something 25 miles past it be a suburb?
Fauquier AKA speed trap is very rural IMO. Just driving through all of the areas other then DC are that are mentioned on this thread are very small. Berkley Springs looks like a nice place though. I hear they have a nice spa. Any suggestions on family friendly things to do there, and has anyone been to the spa? Is it nice?

Yeah, we did a girls weekend a couple of years ago, it was pretty nice. We all liked the bath (I think it is called a Roman Bath) we all got to go in at one time (with our bathing suits on of course ). We ate at the restaurant at the Inn and it was terrible, it might be better now but there are restaurants on 522 in town. There is a rodeo there as well. Here are a few links that may help you out.
Also, you can check out the Cacapon Park off of 522 just down from the spa. We used to take our kids there to go swimming. They have the water roped off so the kids can't go to deep and they have sand were you can lay a blanket down.

I've been looking at the Berkeley Co. area too as I've been thinking about trying for a job in Hagerstown and wanted to stay in WV.I've been living in Parkersburg for a few years, taking a job to get my wife closer to her folks in Charleston and Ohio, after moving from Cumberland,MD.Nothing wrong with this area but it's not home.Having also lived in Hampshire Co. and near Culpeper,VA I've got had the itch to get back. However after reading some of the stuff about the Martinsburg area I don't know now.It seems to be like the Culpeper area is now another D.C. subburb with high property rates. How are the area's like Hedgesville or Falling Waters now? haven't been there for awhile.
I notice this person is a teacher. My daughter and son in law live in Martinsburg. He is a teacher there and she teachers in Hagerstown. There is work there for teachers. And the nearby areas of Harpers Ferry and Charles Town are very nice. Industrial jobs are disappearing just about everywhere since both the elitist fiscal conservatives and elitist wacko liberals want to give the jobs away to China, but overall this is a nice place to live. Some of the residential areas have a certain DC refugee character that is not all that nice, but if you get out of town a bit it is lovely. It does not have a Georgetown nightlife, but there is stuff to do around there and DC and Baltimore are not all that far away. My kids prefer Morgantown, but are basically satisfied with the Eastern Panhandle as a second choice.
Thought those of Martinsburg area may be interested:

The Shepherdstown area is a good place for the arts, music scene etc. Close to everything, and there are affordable building lots & houses. Short drive to shopping in Ranson, Martinsburg, Hagerstown & Winchester. I'm just outside of Shepherdstown about a mile from the MARC station at Duffields making it an easy commute to DC via the train. Property prices have finally fallen enough to make them affordable on a teacher's salary. You can now build a small new house in the $200's if you get an affordable lot.
