This isn't 1950. I've never heard of or seen any Italian discrimination in my lifetime. It isn't even on my generation's consciousness. If I knew you were talking about 20+ years ago, I'd likely agree with you...but it isn't 20 years ago. The only discrimination that appears to be going on is the assumption that people from Southern West Virginia are a bunch of intolerant rednecks. This certainly isn't the case. I hang out in Charleston all the time...with Italian kids....I've never heard anyone call them names..or refuse them service...or particularly care about their heritage.

I'm sure you had your feelings hurt back whenever, I don't doubt that at all, but it's the 21st century now. If gay couples can walk down the street holding hands in Huntington and Beckley without getting any hassle, what makes you think there are still people in back alleys making fun of Italians?

Default best Itialian

Is Fairmont/Clarksburg...almost every little burg hosts a mom and pop resturant with home cooking. The Ellis Resturant in Shinnston is a Drive-in movie theater with fine cooks and friendly people. On Saturdays the biggest flea market in the area is hosted at the Ellis.
Also nearby is a diner called Jimmy's. They feature an Itialian sausage hoagie called the Rosie: Homemade bread, great sausage with homemade hot banana peppers...truely a delight. Everybody waves and says hello.
West Virginia University is about 20 miles North and has a culinary school.
Pittsburgh is doing that too and they are 100 miles away. Both a possiblity for a summer course.
Hidden in this area is Fairmont University. New and hosting five campuses around the area...everything from a first rate nursing program to avionics...most of the school teachers get their degrees here before the go to Virginia and Maryland to work...West Virginia teachers are paid very low wages as a norm.
Rent in these towns range from $600 to $1000 per month. The secret is finding a place in one of the smaller towns...$250 to $300 from a widow needing the income or just because its out of the way. A search would be needed locally...start at the local post office where everyone places a notice...
Monongah, Rivesville, Farmington, Mannington, Shinnston and Lumberport are some of the little gems of towns in the area...safe and welcoming in new moveins...good luck in your search.

Well I speak for myself as a person from the northern part of the state, when I say that I think Charleston, Huntington, and Beckley people are not all intolerant rednecks but everywhere below Charleston and everywhere west of Beckley is by far redneck in every sense of the word. I remember my neighbor saying that she is white and she wouldn't go down there.
