We are thinking of relocating from upper Westchester to a little further down the line, like Pleasantville, Mamaroneck, Sleepy Hallow, Hawthorne. Does anyone know which districts have the best schools and special education services? An integrated kindergarten would be ideal as well. Buses are a must as I will have to work. My little one is autistic. We are downsizing , and cannot afford a very expensive area, like Ardsley (top for autism services.) any help is much appreciated!!

I have heard great things about Pleasantville but I don't think they have bussing. Some people have said Mamorneck has good services, not sure about in particular for ASD. We rent in Dobbs Ferry but are zoned for Ardsley. You might be able to find something less expensive still in Ardsley district. Parts of White Plains and Hartsdale also zone for Ardsley schools. I have also heard wonderful things about Eastchester for ASD stuff. I think it is more affordable there, but that might be too far down South. Not sure what you are looking for. I have also heard some good thing about Croton and Briarcliff Manor. I guess a lot depends on your child, functioning level etc. I assume he/she is pretty high function if you are looking for an integrated setting.

I would also add that Dobbs Ferry schools are 100% integrated i.e. they have no self-contained classrooms and the whole school has gone through lots of support for inclusion etc. Most people I've talked to are very happy with the services they've gotten from the district. Chappaqua has the same philosophy but is pretty expensive so probably not what you are looking for.

Be sure and email all the SEPTA heads. That's how I've found out most of this in my last year of researching (we just relocated from the Midwest with two kids with IEPs and one with ASD.)

Good luck!

My son has autism and I bought in Pleasantville. I looked in Ardsley but I wasn't crazy about the area. There is an area in Hartsdale that is Ardsley schools and it is affordable. I also looked in Eastchester and Bedford. I chose Pleasantville because I loved the town. I heard great things about their autism programs. I didn't worry about the bussing because I leave for work way too early to have my kids on a bus in most of the towns I looked at. I will put them in the daycare in town and they have a bus to school.

Pleasantville is good, but yes, they have no bussing, probably because the town is very small (1.8 sq mi I believe) and most kids live close enough to walk.

I came to Pleasantville from NYC a year ago. Initially I was very happy with the program designed for him, but then things fell apart. I moved specifically for a quality inclusion program for my son, and was given misinformation that P really pushed inclusion. But I recently had an advocate look over his IEP and learned that he was in a self contained classroom, the DI model. P does provide opportunity for spending time with mainstream kids, but only for socialization purposes. All academics are separated out in a DI setting. If you want quality inclusion, P. is not the place.

Gosh, that's terrible about Pleasantville. That's not at all what I had heard either in my research. If you're really interested in full inclusion look in Chappaqua (have heard first hand from parents who love it there because of their full inclusion program and supports for both the kids with IEP and for the typical kids to learn about how to accept differences etc.) or Dobbs Ferry (which also has no self contained classrooms- although I'm not sure what % of kids that ship out of district but if your kids is HF that shouldn't be an issue.)

DI = Direct Instruction. We moved to Pleasantville a few years ago based on its reputation. Sadly, they are cutting costs so much that they programs are really lacking. They are so concerned about attracting out of district placements as income, they spread themselves too thin.

Does anybody know how different Pleasantville and Mount Pleasant school districts are in terms of special education services?
We are trying to find something to rent in Pleasantville SD but no luck, our agent is recommending trying Mount Pleasant SD as half of the Pville is zoned to that district. I am trying to compare Bedford Rd school to Columbus Elementary and have no idea how these two differ.
