My family and I went to the small beach at Croton Point Park today. Was surprised to see a sign saying tomorrow is the last day the beach will be open, the Westchester Parks website says it will be open until Labor Day. Does anyone know if this is true for the other pools and/or Glen Island beach?
Anyway, I asked the parking booth guy and a lifeguard and they said it's because of lifeguards going back to college, which makes sense, but then both said something like, "Astorino may permanently close the beaches and pools, times are bad".
Now I know that Playland may be a very different place next year; I've also heard rumors that Sprain Ridge Pool will be closed for renovations the way Tibbets Brook was last year (and turned into a "water park"), but it would be sad if the pools and beaches are more limited next summer (i.e. weekends only).
Maybe if the Westchester public employee unions would agree to things like contributing to their health insurance like almost everyone else the county government would have more money to actually provide services to the tax payers.
Government workers should never have been alowed to unionize in the 1st place. Look at California as a glaring example. So much of the taxes are paid out in union benefits and entitlements that there is nothing left over for infrastructure nor services. Our town in LA couldn't even have parades anymore unless we paid the city tens of thousands for shutting down a very quiet residential block on a Sunday (because of course the officers needed OT, meals and holiday pay).
