My husband and I are looking for a place to move with our two kids (4yo and 1yo), with an easy commute to White Plains. I'm hoping to find a 'walkable' town with lots of community activities, green space, and great schools. We don't really want anything with an urban feel, as we're moving from Brooklyn and looking for a change. Our budget for a 4 bedroom house is about $450k. We haven't come up to visit yet, but Katonah sounds amazing from what I've read online. I think it may be well out of our budget, though.

Any suggestions for other towns to check out?

Thanks!

You will want to stay north of White Plains. Katonah is pricey. A town like Yorktown/Yorktown Heights would fit the bill.

My husband and I are also currently looking at homes in Westchester. You won't be able to find a 4 bedroom house in lower Westchester in a good school district for that amount. I am not sure how far away it is from White Plains, but I have heard that Croton is nice, and is a bit less pricey than other towns in Westchester.
Katonah is amazing, but I bet a four bedroom house in town goes for at least $600,000!

Check out Valhalla. Directly north of White Plains with good schools.

Croton, Cortlandt?! Easy commute to White Plains? That would be something of a haul. 287 is usually congested an you don't want that drive north when it's snowing. After Pleasantville it's all ice. I live in Yorktown and commute across 287 and would advise against this.

You would love Pleasantville. For 450K may you could find a 3-bedroom house.

I live in Yorktown Heights and commute to the Bronx. I leave my house at 9:20 and pull into the parking lot at 9:55. I have also commuted to New Rochelle via I-287 w/o too much trouble. The traffic situation is dependent on the time of day you need to be at work. The winter is icy but the town of Yorktown Highway Dept does an excellent job with snow removal. I just put my house on the market for $364,900 and it has 3 bedrooms on a little more than 1/3 acre lot. You can find 4 bedroom houses in your price range in Yorktown Heights but be advised that taxes are between $9-13K.

That would be very difficult. I was looking for a year. Anything in that price range was either really small (1200 sq ft) or something was wrong with it (on the train tarcks, needed tons of work, etc).

Not really. Look around. Numbers of people hit by the current economy.
