Hi. I live in Westchester County -bought a house 6 months ago. My wife does not work at this time. We have two small children. It looks like I will be terminated shortly with no severance or paid COBRA. I have an emergency fund and I can pay the mortgage for a while. The problem is that COBRA would cost me $1,800-1,900 and that would wipe me out very fast. I understand from other people who have lost their jobs that there are health insurance plans to temporarily cover families in situations like me. Can anyone tell me where I may find this info so I can get ready for this stressful event? Thanks.
If your income really goes down enough, you should be able worst case to get Medicaid. But unless you have a lot of interest income from investments (I mean like on the level that it's close to a regular jobs salary) or something, you should be able to get Healthy NY and Child Health Plus even if you end up working p/t. We're in a situation like yours and we're on Healthy NY (also known as Family Health Plus) and Child Health Plus. Good luck!
If I were to go on unemployment, how much would the Family Health Plus cost (estimated guess) for a family of 4. Two kids, spouses. Thanks. I guess whatever plan doesnt look at assets, only income. I don't have a load of money, just money I have saved in 401ks etc.

Possibly nothing (as it is for us), it depends on your income.
Child Health Plus is even easier. I think under $50K/year or so (also varies with family size, I'm using a family of 4) it is free. Then there's 4 steps ranging from $9/month to $40/month, the latter topping out at about $85K/year.
Thanks! Glad to see there are programs for people that end up unexpectedly in these situations.
