Moving to Westchester
Hi there,
A question towards people living in westchester. Thanks in advance !
I am starting work in Hawthorne in the Fall and my wife, me and our kid (1 year old) are moving to Westchester from Europe. I used to live for short periods in both Ossining and White Plains (3-4 months each time), back when I was single. But I am not familiar with the other cities. I am 30 and my wife is 29 (and kid is 1 year old).
We are willing to spend up to 2,500$ on renting an apartment (we don't want to rent a house). I am wondering what are good options ? I will need to get to Hawthorne daily obviously.
I was considering White Plains, and Yorktown. I've been to Tarrytown few times (just to a restaurant) and Thornwood. Didn't like Thornwood.
I really didn't like Ossining and White Plains was much better for me. I've been to Yorktown once and its pretty secluded place for first impression, but may be ok for a family. My wife likes to go to the gym and shop.
Obviously, high on the list is a safe neighborhood and very good childcare program. I didn't get impression Ossining and White Plains were that safe.
Any idea what other towns would also be good for us ?
thanks

Look into condos since you do not want a house. the nicest areas for your wife would be Briarcliff Manor and Mount Kisco - these are upscale / nice areas that also have a fair number of condo options. Since your wife likes shopping, I would highly recommend Mt Kisco. It was recently voted "Best family town in Westchester" by Westchester magazine. It has a lot of small shops, some larger chain stores, parks, restaurants, and it is accessable to Hawthorne easily. Briarcliff Manor is between Ossining and Pleasantville and is accessable to all as well. Also, Perhaps you might like to look into Eastchester / Bronxville. There are plenty of excellent condo rental options, excellent shopping center w/ upscale department store, also accessable to Hawthorne by the Bronx River Parkway or I think Saw Mill parkway - not far.
White Plains is also a good choice, but much more conjested. If you look for rentals on North Broadway, going towards North White Plains(near Pace University) it will be very conenient to get to Hawthorne, and you will avoid downtown traffic. Good luck with your search!

HI, For $2500 a month your rental options are pretty wide open, from Condo's, houses, co-ops...White Plains has gotten more congested as mentioned by the previous poster but they have tons of shopping, restuarants, and nightlife (kind of a mini manhattan). The quieter areas would be Pleasantville, Briarcliff, parts of Mt. Kisco. By checking out any of these areas you will be close to shopping and the gym for your wife and only minutes from your job location of Hawthorne. Moderator cut: removed

child care in Westchester/NY
This web page is great for finding child care facilities, with profiles. Type the zip code and find out what the community has to offer (unfortunately very little in many places!!)

Yorktown is an average suburban town and not all that secluded but you may have only seen the southern end which is very tree covered and spread out. Your best bet in Yorktown would be to check out the condos. Some, like Jefferson Valley are pretty much senior citizen, but there are a number I have seen driving through that are all age. Try a site like Realtor.com to see what is out there in your price range.
Yorktown has 3 gyms, that I know of, and is within 20 minutes of shopping in almost all directions. If she drives a little further there are tons of malls available, as well as the small mall in Yorktown'[s north end called Jefferson Valley Mall.
