Question Relocating from England

Hi, is there anybody out there who can help. My husband and two girls are going to relocate from England to New York sometime soon and have no idea where we should start our search for a home. I would like to live in the suburbs, and am willing to commute up to one hour 15 minutes daily to get to Manhattan. I would like to live in a place with a good community, and good primary (first) schools for my daughter. We are looking to rent and could spend ~$3000 a month. Where's nice, safe and with lots to do (tennis for me and coarse fishing for my husband). Any suggestions greatfully recieved.

I don't know what coarse fishing is, but Westchester would likely be a good place to start. Given the generous commuting time you provided, it shouldn't be too hard. Is the job on the East side or West side of Manhattan (that does make a difference)?

We just moved to Garden City on Long Island and love it. In the middle of Nassau county. Close to everything, great town. Beautiful homes, great schools (focus on academics as well as athletics and culture), very community and family focused. Minutes from TONS of shopping, parks, and restaurants. Community facilities are good, too...parks, community pool, event, etc. 20-30 min (traffic) to great beaches and to the beautiful North Shore. 5 LIRR (train) stops in the village, close to 2 others. 40-50 min tops to get into NYC. Overall, a reallt excellent place. Good facilites including a number of tennis courts and community leagues. Some are in a bubble for year round use. Not sure about the fishing thing, but a lot of water is pretty close.

Feel free to send me a private message if you'd like to discuss.

Good luck.

Check out Pearl River. It's only 32 miles outside the city, but it's like another planet - the epitome of the quiet little suburb with SO much to offer and super schools.

Lots of parades (the second largest St. Patrick's Day parade in NYS), festivals and carnivals throughout the year. Just a real lovely community. And there is little to no crime. The town motto is "The Town of Friendly People" -- and they live up to it!

I was raised there, and have many, many fond memories. From what I've been told, it hasn't changed that much over the years -- it just got more expensive. There was a time when it was almost all Irish Catholic, but that's not the case anymore - it's extremely diverse.

Oh, and there's the cutest little train station with service to the city, so that's a plus.

I think you would really like it - especially with kids. My opinion -- It's the best place in the world to raise kids. Safe, good education -- I wish I could afford to live there, I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Just found this link for you -- it's from their local paper - a photo tour of a Day In The Life of Pearl River. Enjoy!
