Hi everyone, we recently saw a home in zip code 10604 which was listed as being in White Plains (it's in the White Plains school district as well). However, I've also seen it listed as being a part of West Harrison.

So I wanted to ask, does it really matter in terms of being a home owner if we are administered by White Plains or West Harrison? Is it strictly a postal concern? I am just trying to consider all of the potential consequences if we buy in White Plains but actually wind up being in West Harrison.

Thanks in advance.

With White Plains schools, you are within the city limits. However 10604 can be listed as either, as it is the West Harrison P.O., not unlike other communities, such as Bronxville where the P.O. zone extends beyond the municipality. Just as Yonkers properties use Bronxville 10708, White Plains properties can be listed as West Harrison 10604.

A postal zone "City" and "Town" is an administrative district established by the U.S. Postal Service to deliver the mail. Postal zone "City" and "Town" may not (but are encouraged to) conform to municipal or community borders. Thus, postal zone location does not always determine city, village or hamlet location.

Thus, you need to be aware:

In many areas of New York State, the problem of non-conforming postal zones leads to a situation where the majority of places have a different community name in their mailing address than the community where that place is actually located.

We just bought (early Oct) in 10604.

Strictly postal - as we were signing docs, many said West Harrison, while others said White Plains.

How do you like 10604 so far Jimboski? Any concerns with public safety at all?

We're edging closer to making a decision, but we're still looking at a few places in the 10605 zip of White Plains.

The '604 has been great to us so far.
Public safety - no concerns. We live a stone's throw from George Washington Elementary and couldn't say enough nice things about the area. I walk past the school, and criss cross through a few streets on my way to the North White Plains station every morning and night; again no concerns.

White Plains city has slightly higher sales tax than Harrison.
