I live in GA now, but I grew up in Bklyn and moved to White Plains when I got married. It was a great place to live. I only moved because of economic reasons. tThere is an area of WP along North Bdwy that is all condos and coops and it is very close to the train. Another option is going up a little more north and looking in Valhalla.
The Century 21 office on Mamaroneck ave was a big help.
Good luck.

If you could consider living in Yonkers, you could definitely consider Fleetwood. Not sure what you are looking to spend on coops, but you'll need at least 10% down. I've seen some complexes in Yonkers requiring 20% down. Other than those towns, you'll have to look further out to find something cheaper.

I live in northern MT. Vernon just outside of Fleetwood. It is very "white" non the less still diverse. And, best of all, it's not the "Hood"

A place for you in Peekskill
Hi... ran across your post... my widowed mother is selling a beautifully renovated 2 bedroom + office nook, 1 1/2 bath duplex garden apartment style coop. Included Pool membership, tennis, parking & heat. For this unit - income level must be $65,000. It is priced @ $209,000. You can commute from the Peekskill Train right into Grand Central.. I believe the Express is just under an hour. The complex is a quiet - surburban neighborhood...friendly neighbors...not noisy at all. If interested.. I can email you photos. Downtown Peekskill has Performing Art's center - access to the Hudson River, places to eat & shopping. The views from the terraces are beautiful!

Maybe a good realtor is the solution? My realtor is pretty good, she is not pushy and understanding.

Interesting. What is the commute like from Peekskill?
I see a monthly metronorth pass at about $245. Are there more affordable options for getting into manhattan from Peekskill.
I'm also considering yonkers and fleetwood however I see more spacious options further north. I'm also not too adverse to more travel. interesting year for me.. with bonuses i made 80K this year. Last year I surpassed 65K as well so i'm hoping with a 732 fico and at least 10% down (which i have) i can get something decent for my daughter and I.

Sorry for the delay in responding; Most people take Metro-North - Peekskill Residents get a discounted parking permit at the station; but I believe there is an express bus also available. (My Mom was retired when she lived there and did not do the commute). This Coop seems more concerned w/annual income criterea than down payment amount. It sounds like you are comfortably w/in the requirements. The 2nd bedroom is a very nice size, with it's own balcony and large closet - so your daughter would be very comfortable. The complex if very quite and safe there are both public and parochial school very near by. The after-school program (child care) is very reasonable and according to my sister - who lived in Peekskill until last year - very well run. I believe they are open until 6 or 6:30 pm... They may also have a morning program..not sure, fee free to email me at rmuscolo@aol.com if you would like photos or information.

There are a bunch of coop apartments on Bronx River Road (they have Bronxville PO's but are NOT in Bronxville) that are walking distance to the Mt. Vernon West station. One of my friends lives there. Not too sure about the surrounding area but I don't think it is too bad.
There are also apartments in the east side of Yonkers on Tuckahoe Rd that are in a nice area and walking distance to the Tuckahoe train station.

I live in Fleetwood and it's nice for singles and people without kids, but if you have kids I think they have to go to Mount Vernon schools which are terrible.

Do you have kids? If not there are very nice parts of Yonkers. The schools are no good, but there are some quiet neighborhoods.
