I live in fleetwood. I'd recommend it over peekskill in a heart beat. and, sorry for those in peekskill, but I think peekskill is dumpier and more crime ridden than fleetwood. (mind you, i'm distinguishing fleetwood from the rest of mt. vernon - if I didn't, then I'd say mt. vernon and peekskill are on par w/one another based on what I see in local news)
It's one of the fastest commutes you'll find from westchester.
gotta tell ya - most my friends and family are in bklyn and they think I live "up state". If you've friends and/or family in bklyn, they may never come visit if you go all the way up to peekskill. (could be a good thing!!!)
I'd suggest a co-op in fleetwood, tuckahoe, bronxville p.o. (which is yonkers), eastchester, hartsdale, and new rochelle (but closer to the larchmont/mamaroneck border - not south). you may even be able to find something affordable in white plains. maybe.
shop around. you may find a fixer upper. but no matter the condition of the apt. be sure to analyze the financials of the co-op.

I guess you've never been to Peekskill.....
Just reading the last reply... No Wayis Peekskill nearly on par with Mount Vernon as to crime!!! There is one small housing project (one apartment building to be exact) that has had trouble - which is located in "downtown" Peekskill. There is very little other residential development in Down Town... most are single family homes on the outskirts, then you get your Condo's - some on the Riverfront with spectacular views and price tags to match; and then a handful of Co-op developments (about 3-4) which are also on the outskirts of the "city".... I grew up & live in a small neighboring town, and have No problem going into Peekskill at any time of day to attend events at the Parmount or eat at the restaurants. They have their own police force, who patrol - mostly ticketing red-light runners or expired parking meters...it is truly a Suburb with a small "city" down town area - which you could walk across in twenty minutes! My husband is from Brooklyn and Long Island - yes, they consider it "upstate" too...but it's only about an hour's drive....I truly suggested you get in the car or hop a train and take a day trip.... Everything is relative, but the comparison of Peekskill to Mt. Vernon is off the mark!

honey - i've been to peekskill and was SCARED
yes, I've been to peekskill. have you ever been to fleetwood?
the fleetwood section of mount vernon which borders on both bronxville and pelham* do not compare to what I've seen of peekskill - or downtown mount vernon for that matter. I have friends who live in peekskill and are always complaining about gangs. And any time I've been to peekskill, there are always people hanging out on the streets making you feel really uncomfortable about walking away from your car... no thanks.
and yes, according to crime rates (check them out) they are on par. unfortunately you can't get stats for fleetwood vs mount vernon, but I can tell you that having lived here for the past 9 years, there are NEVER gangs hanging out on the streets.
come take a look at my neighborhood - couple the atmosphere with a 26 min train ride to GCT - and I still say it blows peekskill away.
to each there own.
(*the part bordering pelham is often referred to as chester heights.)

Fleetwood v. Peekskill??? so different!
It is like comparing oranges and apples. They are at least 30+ miles apart. Fleetwood is closer to Brooklyn than Peekskill. Most people in Fleetwood work in the city, go into city regularly, etc. These are two areas that have virtually no similarities. I don't think there are many living in Fleetwood who would opt for Peekskill, vice versa.

I'm pretty sure there are parts of Peekskill where "there are never gangs hanging out in the street". You couldn't however honestly say that you lived in Mount Vernon and were scared in downtown Peekskill, could you? This is Mount Vernon we are talking about, isn't it? But of course, you live in "Fleetwood" .

brooklyn to white plains takes about 45 minutes by car. Not a bad ride, its all highway except the whitestone bridge has a toll.I drive from central westchester which is 5 minutes from white plains to brooklyn and its not a big deal.
