Hi All,

My wife and I are taking a look at Croton-on-Hudson, and I'm trying to figure out how our daily commutes to NYC would shape up. I work at 14th St and 8th Ave, making the commute from Grand Central a bit of a pain. I noticed that an Amtrak train runs from the Croton-Harmon station to Penn, which would shave about 10 minutes off my commute.

My question is, are people doing this? I can't find anyone on this forum or others regularly using Amtrak to commute. It also appears that Amtrak doesn't offer a monthly pass for that route, is that correct?

Thanks,
- Eric

I commute daily from Croton-Harmon and my office is in the building on top of Penn Station--so trust me I've looked into this. Amtrak is very expensive and very unreliable (the morning trains are always late!). It's about $20 a trip, with no monthly discounts. I've taken Amtrak in about 6 times when I've had early morning meetings (the ride is about 35 minutes and then I'm literally under the building), and I've taken it home about as many times when I've had to work really late or when there have been problems at Grand Central (like the pipe explosion that closed it down for hours). So Amtrak is a great backup and I love having it as an option. But it is not a viable daily alternative.
