Need help, trying to decide where to rent in the westchester county as moving from Hoboken since my wife works in Purchase (I am in midtown) and her commute is roughly about 75 mins. We have a 18 mth old who goes to day care and will be good to have day care closer to my wife's work location for easy drop off and pick up.

Looking to balance between my commute to midtown and her drive to work (upto 15-20mins is ok) along with a possible view around the school ratings for a good public school.

What are some of the things we should be looking for such as groceries, costco/bj's, shoprite etc?

How much is your rent in Hoboken and how much do you think you can get in a place like Tarrytown, or Yonkers-Bronxville PO?

If rent is at parity, it does not look like there is a compelling reason for you to stay at Hoboken. Westchester has COSTCO, BJs as well as supermarkets like Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.

If your kid is 18 months, it does not look like you need to worry about public schools for another 4 years.

Like Forest Hills Daddy said, I wouldn't worry about finding the right school district now, which should give you a lot more lattitude around finding a place.

Child Care Council of Westchester, Finding child care, training for child care providers in Westchester County NY has a search function for daycare, home-based and centers.

Purchase is close to a number of decent daycare centers in White Plains near 287/Hutch (Bright Horizons, YWCA and others). Mamaroneck/Larchmont has several options, both home-based and center based, as do Scarsdale, Eastchester and Tuckahoe. So depending on where you end up, you should be able to find one that's convenient for your wife's commute. I would look in all of those places for rentals, plus Bronxville PO (no daycare centers there, but the other places will be on the way).

I wouldn't go to Tarrytown (or any of the river towns), only because 287 kind of sucks for commuting. So if there's no compelling reason to settle there, focus on Harlem line and New Haven line towns.

New Rochelle is an excellent choice, since it has all the grocery stores you need such as shoprite and costco, plus a wide array of day care centers, its very close to purchase and the has a metro north station on the new haven line
