I am driving from Newton, NJ to Maine in a week, and was wondering the best way from the Bear Mountain Bridge to I-84 E in Brewster, NY
I will be taking county roads up to NY-17 (U.S 6 E) in NY, then over the Bear Mountain Bridge on the Hudson. Is anybody here familiar with getting from the Bear Mountain Bridge to I-84 E, a bit on confusion I guess.
Last time in the summer when I crossed the Bear Mountain Bridge there was a detour for U.S east of the hudson, I had to go north on 9d then 403 E, to U.S 9 S and then 6 E. This really frustrated me as I wasn't familiar with those roads. I believe that detour has been around for quite a bit of time because there were signs saying U.S 6/U.S 202 alternative. Is anyone familiar with these back roads around Peekskill area? Is there still this detour? Anyone know about this U.S 6 detour?
Detour or No Detour, I need the best way from the Bear Mountain Bridge to I-84. Should I take U.S 202 and go to I-684 N first or what? I could also take 9D north up to I-84 E as well, but if you look on a map you see that Beacon, NY is consistently north of Brewster, NY (Where I-684 and I-84 intersect) so is thats till a good idea to take 9D north until Beacon, or should I take U.S. 202 E from BTM to I-684 to I-84 through Peekskill or what?
Could someone please help me with this and tell me exactly what route to take, maybe locate it on a map if possible. And How fast are those back roads from the Bear Mountain Bridge to I-684 or I-84 whatever?
The most direct route would be to take U.S. 6 straight through to where it meets I-684/I-84 in the village of Brewster.
US 6 and US 202 split in the city of Peekskill, and US 202 takes the more southern route through Yorktown and Somers, and then meeting US 6 again. It's a slower, more winding route, and I wouldn't see the point in going south only to go north.

I had to go there from Danbury,CT (right over the NY state line). I took 84 to I-684 to Route 35 to Bear Mountain Parkway to Route 6 and then over the bridge. It as a very easy drive and took me about 55 minutes.
Why not just take the thruway to Newburgh NY and get on 84 there - then its only 25 mins. to CT border.
