Hi!
My fiance and I are considering a move to Tarrytown or the surrounding areas on the Hudson...what is the commute/traffic like from Tarrytown to White Plains? I will be commuting via train into the city and he will drive to White Plains around 7:30-8 am. Any info/tips much appreciated! Thanks! |

Although Tarrytown is not far from White Plains, the morning commute along 287 tends to be bumper to bumper. But given that tens of thousands of people cross the Tappan Zee Bridge everyday, and some come as far as Orange County, I guess Tarrytown is not too bad.

Thanks! Any idea how long it takes? Is there a town that would be better but has the same vibe/feel as Tarrytown?

If you want a confenient Hudson River town with a good vibe, Tarrytown is it.
I suggest you take a drive during rush hour to see how long it takes. The traffic is usually lightest on Monday, so you should go on another day of the week. |

I'd budget almost 30 minutes for that, even though not in rush hour that ride is like 10 minutes. There is a huge traffic jam going that way every morning. Bumper to Bumper with the sun shining in your eyes. Generally its not a pleasant ride.
Why not just live in White Plains and commute to the city from there? |

We looked at White Plains and it just isn't very attractive to us - not very inspiring and we would like to be by water...

Hi,
I moved to Tarrytown about 2 years ago from Manhattan. It does hae a nice vibe to it, and it's beautiful! I work in West Harrison (right next to White Plains) and it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work. However, that's about 9-9:10 in the morning and I think traffic is a little worse earlier than that. Aurora |

I wouldn't take 287, if you're in Tarrytown you might be better off taking 119 (Tarrytown Rd) into White Plains. 287 gets backed up alot

I live in Tarrytown, and used to commute to Greenwich CT - straight across the entire length of 287. I would leave Tarrytown about 7:15 and arrive in Greenwich approx 7:35. If i was to leave 15 minutes later, i would hit traffic to approx exit 8 (for the westchester mall) and then smooth sailing until the merge with 95. If your husband can leave by 7:15, he will have no problem. I find the worst is between 7:30 and 8:45, then it starts to lighten up. The reply about 119 is an option too, until you hit downtown white plains...then the lights seem to slow you down.
All that being said - there is NOTHING like Tarrytown. It's awesome!! Great community, great old world downtown feel, and a fantastic rivertown! Just stay off of broadway from 3pm-5pm - very backed up!! Good luck! |
