Hello there!

Husband and I are moving from London for his job which will be in Greenwich, CT. I'll be looking for work in NYC, we both are keen to avoid long commutes. We're looking to rent initially, then buy in about a year. Coming from outside the area and having no prior knowledge of it, anyone have any suggestions? We live in an area of London that's like a little village, lots of shops and restaurants, diverse population, and it'd be great to find something similar. I went to Greenwich to have a look around, and while it's lovely, it seems like you have to drive everywhere, which seems lonely. No kids, only a dog. Any advice would be greatly appreciated! x

Congrats on your move, acw1! While I am from the NY metro area, I lived in London on and off for about five years and I've always said that NY is closer to London (and Westchester to its villages/residential neighborhoods) than any other area in the US. I think you will find much familiarity here.

My husband and I are planning to move from the City, to Westchester and have explored/learned much these last couple of months -- info I'm happy to share with you. Since you are looking to rent first, many more options are open to you in terms of exploration. Would you want to rent a house or a condo/apartment first?

Greenwhich is absolutely lovely, but I agree it's more of a traditional suburb (rather than having a village-feel ) and a car is needed. Since your husband will be commuting to Greenwich and you might commute to NYC, I'd reccommend the Westchester towns along the LI Sound as being the most convenient for you both: Rye (less diverse but beautiful), Mamaroneck (more diverse), Harrison, Larchmont (has many European ex-pats), Pelham (which is more diverse, very close to the City and I'd imagine only about 30 minutes to Greenwich -- kind of a midway point for you both). Each town has a main street/village. I think Pelham, Larchmont and Mamaroneck will offer you the mix of commute, rental offerings, walkable main street you are seeking. Some would argue that Larchmont is less diverse, but given it's larger European community, I disagree and think it's very much worth looking at.

I have more info I'd be happy to share if you like either here or in a PM!

Having lived in Larchmont (6 years )and Greenwich(14 years).... I was initially tempted to say Greenwich, especially in the villages ( Old Greenwich, Riverside or downtown)... but noting that your planning on renting and have no kids in schools ... I would recommend Larchmont which is a fine town and would give you easy access to neighboring communities when you eventually are looking to purchase a home. The commute to either NYC or Greenwich are about equal from Larchmont.. say about 30 mins each way by train
