I'm a single creative professional looking for a decent/active area to rent in for a year and maybe more in White Plains. I'm originally born and raised in NYC and don't have a problem with "dicey" areas as long as they're lively and have good "hangout" places, cafe's, bars.....etc. within walking distance. Schools for kids, hustle and bustle (noise) aren't issues, and as long as there's no drive-by shootings or gang activity , I'm fine if the area has some "flavor" to it.

I'll be commuting to NYC, working long hours, and really just want a place where I can walk to the local hangouts and relax.

Any ideas?

Try bank street commons. Since you work in NYC and late hours your best bet is to live closest to MTA

Stay in Manhattan.
Why on earth would you want to come up here?

White Plains is great, Im 26 married with no kids and I would never move to the city, pay an extra 3% on taxes... no thanks, plus its such a nice area, things are open late and there is plenty of nice places to drive or walk or if you are in the mood for the city hop on the MTA. I am a bit worried about Mamaroneck ave, shops keep closing and for rent signs keep going up.

Agreed with Bank Street Commons - you can walk to Mamaroneck Ave (the only place with bars/restaurants) and you are across the street from the train station.
But I also think you may want to consider staying in Manhattan or going to Brooklyn.
