I know of pretty nice apartment complexes in New Rochelle and white plains.
Do a google search for "Drake House, Harbor House (waterfront complex) New Rochelle" and "The Churchill White Plains." I would give you the url, but I think that is against the rules. Drake and Harbor are in New Rochelle, close to the train station. Churchill is in White Plains. Take a look, the web sites have good info and floor plans to look at! I may be late to this thread but I will tell you here is the real truth:
95% of Manhattan will be eliminated from consideration if your rent budget is less than $3,000 a month for a tiny apartment (plus a 15% brokers fee) and want to pay less than $300 a month for parking. $1,500 - -$2,000 is doable in the eastern half of Queens (east of the Van Wyck) for a smallish (500 - 700 square foot) apartment. The trendier parts near Manhattan like Astoria, Jackson Heights, Woodside, Forest Hills & Sunnyside have gotten ridiculously overpriced where one bedroom apartments rent for close to $2,200 a month and you have 30 or more applicants per vacancy. The housing bubble & rent bubble has not deflated at all in the NYC metro area or suburbs. Rents & Home prices are staggering and very high if you make less than $150,000 a year and live outside of Manhattan... |

my son recently started a job in harrison, he lived in queens and after 2 months of commuting from kew gardens they called it quits in the city and moved to west harrison. the traffic coming home is brutal and the rain and flooding made it even worse. not to mention over 300 a month in easy pass for him and his wife.

Hi CountDrak
I worked in White Plains & North White Plains for many years. There are some great houses & rentals in those areas. A friend of mine lives near Gedney Way & that is a great area. IMO, North White Plains is nicer, more residential, like a hamlet Cute little train stations too. White Plains is more urban, the closer to Galleria Mall, the higher the crime rate. The residential areas are fine. No, you don't need a realtor, I'll PM u some referral sources that are free so you can check out available rental prices with no pressure/realtors, etc. Good Luck ! |

I do not live in the NY Tri-State area, but I may be considering a move out there as well some time in mid-2007 at the earliest. I was born in Chicago and have lived in the Chicago area all my life. In any case, White Plains would certainly be a good place for you to begin with your housing search. The distance from that North White Plains area to Harrison seems to be about 7.8 miles at all. My estimate is that the Metro North train from there to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan might clock in at around 40 minutes give or take. So now, onto the second part of my post.
I too had considered White Plains as a possible place to live in the future. However, the city of Stamford, Connecticut had gained a great deal of appeal for me as well. From talking to people I received the general impression that Stamford had lower taxes, cleaner apartment buildings (probably newer housing stock as well), great finance jobs, etc. etc. The crime rate I think is a bit lower in Stamford as well. The distance from Stamford to Harrison is a bit further, however. It would be about 11.9 miles give or take. Stamford also has express trains to Grand Central Terminal in Manhattan that clock in at 40 minutes, and 60 minutes on the non-express trains. In your case, White Plains still seems to be the geographically more advantageous bet. However, I think that it might not hurt to look around the Stamford area as well in addition to White Plains. The two cities are similar in the sense that they are "satellite" cities of NYC. Also worth mentioning is that the northern part of the Stamford area is supposed to have a very lovely, but probably expensive housing stock. Downtown Stamford is pretty much situated in the southern part of the area along the Long Island Sound. If I were you I'd probably go out there and visit these areas some time to get a better feel for the areas. Good luck! |

GO to the North East Bronx, Throgs Neck or Country Club you are 20 min from Manhattan and 25 minutes to Westchester, Public transportation to Manhattan, express bus (very Safe) or subway (iffy) great neighborhoods, decent schools. RIght in your price range.
