We're looking to buy a house in Westchester and White Plains is one of the areas we're seriously considering. We're also looking in Harrison and the whole Mount Pleasant area. I just wanted some advice on how the schools in White Plains work.
There are I believe 5 elementary schools?
Do your kids go to the closest one to your house or is is a lottery to see which school they go to? Are the schools all on par with each other? They seem to be fairly similar according to greatschools but I know that's not the whole picture.
Thanks in advance!

We have a 4.5 year old, and just went through the first part of the process. You are correct that kids are not assigned to the school they live closest to. There is a choice program. You get to tour as many of the schools as you want (we toured 3), and then rank them. We've heard that the vast majority of people get one of their top choices.

For what it's worth, I attended WP public schools myself, and think they're great. (Many people from WP return to raise their families.) From my perspective, people make too big of a deal about the ranking process, because the schools are hardly different from each other. My wife was mad at me for not taking the tours more seriously, but I just didn't see the differences between them as being significant enough to stress myself out over the decision. Ultimately, the 3 we ranked were the 3 closest to us, and we ranked them in order of distance from our house. I honestly won't care much at all when we learn which one we got. We know people with kids in each of the 3 we ranked, and they are all happy.

In WP you select your top 3 choices for elem. schools. In MArch-April you are informed of the placement. Each school has their area of expertise. I highly recommend calling the board of ed and taking a tour of each school before you make your top 3 choices. Good luck!
