I don't know how much the river itself factors into your criteria, or if walkability is the main issue here, but if you're willing to forgo the former, Mt. Kisco has a "real" and vibrant downtown and a Metro North Station, newish library, hospital right there and a quick jaunt to 35 gets your back to Connectiicut quicker than those river towns if you have family back there. And it's less congested than the river towns to boot.
I completely agree with the above poster about Mt Kisco. That's actually what I had in mind when I asked if you would only consider river towns. The Mt Kisco downtown is more active than any of the rivertowns' and the commute to the city is 50-65 mins.
Thank you both for the Mt Kisco suggestion. It sounds like it fits the bill for us, especially in terms of commute time and having a real downtown. I'll research MK some more to see what property is like, as well as the general vibe. It sounds like it might be worth a visit!
