My husband has been commuting to Queens from the west side of Michigan since September. We are now ready to move our family to the NYC area. We are midwestern middle class professionals with a daughter entering 10th grade and a son entering 7th grade. We are looking for a town with great schools. Also looking for sports - lacrosse, cross country, football, basketball. Our housing budget is $800K max. I've noticed this doesn't buy much around NYC. I don't want my kids to go to a 'snobby' school where they are made to feel poor, but I want them to get a good education. I know nothing about the NYC area. Can anyone please give me any suggestions? Towns?

The money element is huge in the Metro area and especially so in Westchester. Of your husband is working in Queens, Bayside Queens or thereabouts may be an option. My relatives who live there tell me that housing in that area would be in your price range and there would not be the sense of feeling poor. Housing in general is very tight in the Metro area and it is reflected in the pricing. The taxes in Westchester are beyond insane.

I would look into Douglaston, Queens, as well as some towns in Nassau County.
