Hey, been checking thru the forums for a few days. I came up with this thread, which simply advises to stay off the BQE:

Commute - Staten Island to White Plains

Does anyone have any more specific advice? I've been taking George Washington Bridge / I-95 S / Goethals Bridge and think it's a safe and pretty stress-free commute, but many are advising the BQE route in other parts of the web.

Thoughts? It looks like the NJ route is about 15$ in fare south and 15$ north.

Verrazano exiting Staten Island is about 11$, making BQE about 5$ one way south and 15$ home north.

So I'm saving 10$ using the much more brutal (in my opinion) BQE commute, along with its 50mph speed limit.

I'm fairly new to driving and EZ-Pass so any insight on these calculations would be appreciated. I'm dirt poor.

If this is for a regular commute, in my opinion, you should experiment with both. After enough time you will be in tune with the traffic patterns and know which is the best route - possibly changing depending on the day. I did a commute for a while from Brooklyn to Greenwich CT. After a few days I figured out the best route, but then started to notice patterns - e.g. if it was raining, an alternate way was usually better. I would also adjust the route if I left a half hour earlier or later than usual. If you really want, you can also check online before you leave to see the traffic, if there are any accidents, etc. each day. After sitting in some horrible traffic, you will be happy to pay $10 extra to avoid it. Where in Westchester are commuting from? My instinct says the BQE is your better choice, but I would try both.

We should take Staten Island, and push it somewhere else!

(Lots of crazy Staten Island commute posts on NYC and Long Island forums too, honestly I think that if you are worried about a Staten Island commute, you should be residing in Staten Island or at worst Bayonne or Downtown.)
