Contemplating buying a house in Peekskill, but work in Manhattan/late shift and female. Have a car, but annual "lottery" doesn't sound friendly as far as getting a parking space at the station anytime soon goes :-(
What are the options?? How dangerous would it be to walk up toward the high school?? Help! Somewhat smitten with the city, but this is a big roadblock :-( Thanks in advance, Patty |

Hi Patty,
We moved to Peekskill just last year. At first, we could get just the monthly parking, which even then is not that far from the station. And we were told that most people "win" the parking lottery. Which we did for this year, and it's ours if we want it from now on. So, likely you can work out parking easy enough. There are so many good things about this town -- especially for those who like a less densely populated area and love the Hudson -- but I'm tired now. If you want to know more, you're welcome to send me a private message. Dave the H. Quote:

Definitely don't let the parking lottery scare you. I don't know if I have heard of anyone having a problem getting a permit.
Peekskill train station is no worse than other local train stations at night. You do have cabs that are usually there when the train pulls in. Although, I think that there are less of them as the night wears on. Hudson Ave is a pretty safe area. Depending on the time, I don't know if that would be my first choice, but would be just as cautious walking there late at night as I would be anywhere else. I've lived in the area my whole life, so if you have any questions, feel free. Jill |

One stop down is Cortlandt and if you can't get a Peekskill space or are on the waiting list you can go down there and use the munincipal spaces. They also have a waiting list if you want to get on it. Cortlandt is the same Metro North zone as Peekskill so you can use the same ticket if you've purchased a Peekskill monthly. Get on southbound 9, exit at Montrose/Buchanan, make a right. The station entrance is about a mile up on the right. And the State Troopers have a Barracks there so I've always found it safe although you won't find cabs. Those nighttime express trains stop at both Cortlandt and Peekskill.
Croton Harmon has the most trains because locals, express and Amtrak all stop there. The parking is horrendous, however, and whenever it rains the lot floods and the town isn't responsible for any damages so avoid it at all costs. Good luck!
