One of my real hesitations in leaving the city is my son's pre-school. It's a bilingual Montessori school that I just love. The women who run it are engaging and loving, and I'm so glad my son, (who's half-Hispanic) is becoming fluent in both languages. I speak limited Spanish- not enough to maintain or grow his language ability on my own. I know I could probably seek out playgroups and extracurriculars. But definitely not the path of least resistance for raising a bilingual child. While a great, nurturing school is the most important thing for me, Spanish exposure is a close second. Anyone know of schools that might be a match?
Wow, I'm surprised noone has replied! I've been keeping my eye on this question because soon I'll be searching for the same thing. My daughter is almost 16 months and understands quite a bit of spanish from me so it would be great to build upon that.
I've been checking back on this post simply because I was curious. Westchester has the French American School In Larchmont, the German International School in White Plains. I would recommend looking for a club/community similar to the Italian American Club in Eastchester, they have cultural & language lessons.
Wow following! My husband wants to explore the suburbs but I'm hesitant. I want to continue building my child's Spanish who currently is in a Spanish Immersion 2s program which I love. Hopefully the suburbs catches up soon!!
The New Rochelle elementary schools do a spanish immersion program where they teach half the day in english and half in spanish but you need to apply and be accepted into it. Google it - the program is called CILA (The Children's Language Academy)
1. Bilingual program prior to elementary school in a private school - none has been mentioned
2. Bilingual program in elementary public school - some have been mentioned and there are several others I know of
My wife and I are interested in the same thing. We have just started looking into opportunities and haven't found anything. Judging by the lack of responses here, maybe there isn't anything available or very few and far between. Does anyone know of any meet-ups or playgroups at least for something to start with?
There are several billingual programs for young children through many of the libraries. Obviously these are not immersion programs, but at least provide *some* exposure to the language. We like Fiesta with Flor at the Croton Free Library. My daughter's old preschool did an after school Spanish class, but it was more exposure than full language learning. There are VERY few programs (that I'm aware of) that have Spanish immersion for preschool. I wish they existed because i'd love my kids to really learn the language.
