We recently completed a home energy assessment thru NYSERDA approved contractor. The company does insulation.
The estimate that we received seems very high to me compared to experience of a friend in New Jersey (maplewood)
There are different variables at play, our house is larger, older (Tudor 1928), NYS but the difference in price was order of multiple.
Has anyone insulated in lower Westchester and care to recommend an installer and comment on prices?
Their total estimate is $18,991, and by their savings estimate we are talking about 10 years+ to recoup. This seems crazy expensive money to me and I am going to start shopping the scope around.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
We have been quoted the following:
RIM JOIST: 100 lin ft - $850.00
-Air seal and insulate the rim joist in the basement with 2” of closed cell spray foam
-Price includes stuffing & spraying the open wall bays under the living room step down @ FOH
GARAGE CEILING: 11’ X 43’ or 473 sq ft $2,129.00
-Air seal and insulate all gaps, cracks and penetrations to prevent cellulose from spilling out
-Drill 2 1/4” holes in the plaster & wire mesh every 16” to gain access to the cavities above
-Dense pack all cavities with low dust/borate treated cellulose
-Plug and patch all holes with 2 coats of compound to a rough finish
-Finish coats and paint by others
EXTERIOR WALLS: 2,067 sq ft $11,347.00
-From the exterior or interior of the home, dense pack all wall cavities.
-NOTE->>>>exterior walls are STUCCO and interior walls are plaster with the same stucco texture as the exterior walls.
-Gain access to all wall cavities by drilling a 2 ¼” hole every 16”
-After dense packing, plug and patch all holes with cement or compound.
-Every effort will be made to match both textures as close as possible but we cannot guarantee an exact match.
-Due to height restrictions, the back of house 2nd floor walls might have to be filled from the interior
-Painting by others
ATTIC: 30’ X 40’ or 1,200 SQ FT $4,665.00
-Air seal and insulate all top plates, perimeter plates, chases and penetrations that lead to heat loss or gain from the living space.
-Poly vents all roof deck bays and seal at the perimeter plate to keep cellulose out of the soffits and off the roof deck
-Wrap the chimney chase with fire proof Roxul to BPI standards
-Install 16” retaining walls along both sides of the storage platform
-Dense pack the storage platform
-Weather strip & insulate the entrance door with 2” of closed cell foam board
I did something similar and was shocked at what it would cost to insulate. I found that Nu-Way insulation in Larchmont was by far the most reasonable and my whole street has used them. When the guy came to my house he gave me a quote on the back of his card, it was a little informal, but it is a family run business that has been in Westchester for a long time so I wasn't too worried. Everything ended up working out fine and our house is a lot more comfortable.
I had insulation done on my first floor (blown in), my basement ceiling and the attic. I think the total cost was 9500. We used Good Life Energy Savers from CT. Very happy with them.
